We spent the afternoon at the Mac store in Wellington Green Mall. It was really crowded! I was certainly taken aback at how many people were buying Macs and investigating Macs: The new 3G Iphone, the Mac Book and the Desktop Macs.mac raving fans

I am so tired of our HPs and having to replace computers every couple of years so when my little brother started teasing me about replacing the computers so often he told me he has had his Mac for 12 years and never had a problem with it. He is a graphic artist.

So I fell in love with the 17" screen laptop, the MacBook Pro. We think we have made the decision to convert our office over to Mac.

We also like the idea of the mobile service that Mac offers. But what was the coolest thing is NO MORE TOWERS!No more of those unsightly towers and me forever trying to find better places to hide them and all their ugly cords. The Mac is all built right into the monitor, like it is the whole deal. How cool is that!

Tell me why we should! I would love to read your comments about whether we should make the switch or not.

I think Macs are great.  Other than paying 3 to 4 times the price and having to get special apps to run in a PC world they sound wonderful.  I don't think you can beat the IPhone.  Everyone I know that has one swears by it.  I only wish they sold it for more carriers than AT&T.

My sister and sister-in-law are Mac pros.  They swear by them!  I just bought a new HP ... silly me!

I LOVE MY MAC!!!!

The only time I have had to have mine fixed is when my grandkids got a hold of it.

Unfortunately some Real Estate programs are not written for Mac but that is taken care of with either Paralells or Boot Camp when you switch to PC.

I hope in the future all programs will be written for Mac, maybe we could start a campaign to have that happen.

Haven't tried the IPhone yet as I have a contract with Verizon but as soon as it is up I will switch to AT&T.

If your MLS will run on a Mac, go for it! Yeah, you need special apps to integrate with Bill Gates monsters but I think you'll be happy with the Mac.

Hi Katerina..No More Virus Attacks or Ant-Virus software, they just do not need protection..or so the MAC users tell me. I loved the MAC back in the 80'' but it lacked compatibility with software and still does...so it's a tough decision, it'll depend what's important to you. See if all your contact management and MLS stuff runs on the MAC.

Realtors I know that bought them use them for their personal use and MS PC for work.

As for the IPhone very popular here, but not available with my carrier, so we're waiting for the Palm Pre Due here by the Fall.

Let us know what you decide :O)

Hi Nestor & Katerina,

I'll throw my comment in here because I am not a Mac/Apple user and I do buy 1 or 2 computers each year.

Would I consider buying one?

Yes.

The cost may be higher initally, but I have never heard from a disgruntled Mac user.

Maria- We don't use any of the microsoft products anymore. The Mac Pro comes with Microsoft Office 2008 but I don't use that either.

I use OpenOffice and Google Docs and all the Google products which all work fine with Mac. Katerina

Mike- The 17" Mac Book Pro that I want, fully loaded and more Gs than my Sony VIO- is only $2500. That is about how much I would pay for the similar laptop with the same stuff. So maybe $200 or so more in price. Definately not in my decision processing especially if it will perform better and last longer.

Patty- The only thing that would not work with Mac would be our MLS. I rarely use the MLS. My daughter, our listing manager does all that for me so we can keep one PC for that. Nestor is on MLS a lot so he can keep his Sony VIO lap top just for MLS and his ACT- which we will convert over in time- just a long gruelling process to undertake all at once.

I used to use ACT on my old MAC.  I'm sure they still make ACT for the Mac.  It was great.

There will never be anything like a MAC.  If you can, buy one.
You can also run PC software (a lot of it) on a MAC, so it's worth investigating what you would need and see if it's cost-effective.

I started out on a MAC and went to a PC because of our MLS, and I have hated it ever since.  I never had a problem with viruses or anything else on the MAC, and on the PC, it's hell - most of the time.  MACS may be more expensive, but they are a workhorse and will last forever - with zero issues.  You can't say the same about any PC (or maybe we should be badmouthing Windows instead).

Hi Katerina,

I LOVE my Mac.  Our MLS allows access through "virtual windows" either using Citrix (a pared down version of virtual windows or parallels.  the current system used to function on boot camp, but no longer does.  However, my key card (Sentrilock) will only function with boot camp.  The MLS's have to get with the program and upgrde to allow both operating systems.

Since you do such wonderful graphics - you are going to LOVE the Mac. It's far more intuitive than PC for these things!  Word of warning, once you've come over to the other side - there is no going back!

Katerina - It's interesting to see this post right now, since I am in the same boat.  I am thinking of starting with a Mac laptop.  I LOVE the iPhone, and every friend I have with a Mac is a raving fan.

I second what Jason just said. I have been contemplating getting a MAC next, haven't taken the leap yet - mainly for reasons stated above. I love my iphone too! ~Rita

Katerina - Our house has a mixture. We have the Macbook, the MAC desktop, an HP Laptop, and an HP Desktop. I have some application which run better on the HP so I need to keep them around (including my mortgage website). For all other things, I use the MAC.

I LOVE THE MAC - Its easy to use. The Mac is definitely for the more creative user. I'd prefer to use the Mac all the time, if I didnt have those other applications which require my PC.

I had to stop and take a look into your post. I've been curious about a MAC for a long time. Maybe when I am ready for a new one I'll switch. Now using an HP w/ Open Office.

Katerina,

Go for the Mac, I made the switch 2 years ago, will never go to the dark side again.  As stated previously the MLS is the only hang up to running totally MAC.

Katerina, I switched at Christmas. It has been great, not one virus or crash in 7 months.

I use VM Fusion for the MLS which lets me open the Mac and run Windows XP or I could have chosen Vista which I hated.

I had had my Sony Viao for 3 months when I switched, I think trying to learn Vista was the thing that plundged me over.

It is a totally different operating system and as my kids who all have Mac's tell me all the time, "mom, quit over thinking this, it is a Mac"

One word of caution, IF YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE FILES OFF THE PC AND HAVE THE GENIUS BAR ADD TO THE Mac, MAKE SURE THE ONE DOING IT KNOWS THE PC AND THE Mac.

Is that strong enough....

I still use Quick Books on my PC too as it doesn't function right on the Mac.

Call with questions..

Katerina - My husband is a huge MAC fan.  He has a MAC Pro. He loves his. However, he had to install software called Fusionware to partition his hard drive, to be able to still use Windows XP sometimes. Many applications will not run on the MAC operating systems (Leopard).  Also, some internet applications or sites will only run exclusively on Windows Internet Explorer.  He says you can "make" your MAC do that, but it is not always easy. I am a PC girl, myself.

I thought about it several times, but so far have not decided to make the move. I probably will soon buy a mac, but I don't think it's going to be my only computer. Some things are just not designed for a MAC. But it sure does a great job on blogs and websites.

That is one I have thought about. But I have been using the other guy's system for so long that I am afraid to try to learn it over.

Katrina, Like your brother, I was a graphic desinger for over 20 years. I just can't give up my MAC. I love it. It's easier to use and no viruses although I do buy a new one very 6 or 8 years because of technology advances. The one problem is that some Web sites are not Mac friendly. For instance, I can make a lot of modifications to my own Web site but for some changes I have to use a PC. At our house we have 3 Macs and one PC for games and incidentals.

Wendy- I am a Firefox girl myself, hate IE and only use it for MLS. I sure hope MLS gets up to speed with Firefox and also the Mac. It looks like I will have to keep one PC. I will still keep my Sony VIO laptop and then I will use that for incidentals as Robin does.

Katerina, I bought my Mac almost three years ago when Vista came out - and I have never looked back! It doesn't crash, it's fast, it doesn't get viruses, it's intuitive (there are some things that are different, but definitely buy the OnetoOne class), and editing photos and videos is a breeze and delight!

I use the office PC for MLxchange which still doesn't operate on a Mac but I could get VM Fusionware or Parallels to do it. I just choose not to.

Just bought Frank one for Father's Day and he loves it! Can't wait to hear how much you love yours :)

Katerina,
I'm glad you like Firefox because IE is no longer supported on the Mac.  Mac comes with Safari - but it is not popular enough to "play well" with many sites - so I use it sometimes, but not that often.  Mac and Firefox are an awesome combination!

For those who are on the fence - think of it this way:  Do ANY PC users gush as much about their computers as Mac people?  That should tell you something.  Also, in our area, the economy is pretty bad.  New York got hit hard by the stock market crash!  I vividly remember going to the Westchester Mall - its one of the biggest in the area in downtown White Plains.  Anyway, I was going to the Apple store.  I was walking through the mall - and it was really, really quiet...not many people at all. You could feel how bad the economy was by walking through that mall - until you got to the Apple Store!   The place was jammed!  It was as if 90% of all the people in the entire mall (and this one is HUGE) were jammed into that one small space.  Recession/Depression notwithstanding - the Apple store was thriving.

Ruthmarie- I have to agree. The biggest thing Mac has going for it is the raving fans of who are not paid to do any advertising for them.

And we experienced the same thing, even when the mall is quiet, the Apple store is crowded and has a great energy about it.  It is now on my list. When we get this one certain closing, Nestor says I can have the first Mac in our family:)

Interesting discussion, we have been having the same thoughts. One of our clients, a CIO for a technology company, swears by MACs and says that they helped him stand out in his profession.

Hello Katerina, one of my clients is a Microsoft Partner serving small business owners in Vancouver WA.  A few weeks ago he built for me an "economy" (less than $1,000) desktop with an Intel quad-core processor, 8G of RAM and an evaluation version of the New Windows 7 OS.  I've never been a Vista user but, Windows 7 kicks but over XP.  I'm reading an Outlook e-mail within a minute of hitting the power-on button.

The next step is to get a Netbook (not a laptop) for mobility, and tie the Netbook and desktop together, and I'll be set.  Like many others our MLS and our brokerage is hard-core PC and to make a move would be tough for us.

Good luck with your move to MAC!  John

Katerina, I do like the MAC and have considered it yet the last time I checked, our local Board doesn't run with the MAC.  MAC's are in our household and my husband keeps telling me to get a MAC. However, I'm big into a Tablet PC.  I write on my Tablet for everything and I'd hate to give that up. I don't know if MAC has a Tablet. I've had a Motion Computing and a HP Tablet PC"S; liked my Motion Computing better than the HP though.
