Let's take a look inside your closet. EEKKKK! I just got hit on the head by a tennis racket, and my shoes are buried in your fallen debris. Trust me, this will not help when you sell your home.
What would you guess a buyer thinks when they open up your crammed closet? Wow... this person has too much stuff??? NO, THAT'S NOT WHAT THEY SAY. "Wow, this home doesn't have enough storage." Now, that's what they say. You will have turned off a buyer just because your closet is bursting at the seams and they think your home is short on storage.
And your bookcases??? "They aren't important are they???... after all they are just my furniture that I'm taking with me, right?? WRONG! Your bookcases do a lot to shape the feeling your buyer has when viewing your home.
Check out my video tutorial on preparing your closets and bookcases when putting your home on the market. Your buyers will thank me for it!

Sally you are turning into my video queen. What talent you have with this medium. Closets do need to be decluttered and have openness. I agree about the bookshelves being lightened up. Your inner stager is showing. I like the odd number design you mentioned.
Sally - I love them too... although a look around at my own may tell you a diffrent story! But then again.... I'm not selling my home. I would be a clutter nazi if I were.
Gary - thanks pal... I'm having fun with my videoness. I made this one in the winter, before I started my better editing with my Mac. I just never got it into a blog. You'll be able to tell by what I'm wearing (summer or winter) whether it's an earlier version or not. I have a bunch more coming, including one I took yesterday on the 4th of July on Folsom Lake.
Michelle - Yep, buyers definately open closets... and they should. So have yours ready! Plus it sure makes it easier to find a matching outfit when your colors are all lined up. I am obsessive about that! Short sleeves on the top rod, long on the bottom rod... white on the left to yellow, blue, teals, coral, reds, then ranging to the darkest on the right. My inner secrets revealed!
Oh yes, You have "hit it on the head"! It also is a pain when the home inspector has to remove all the stuff to get up into the attic area! Nice video, well done.
I'm echoing Gary. Your videos are spot on and fun to watch. Hope they're bringing some new business your way, given the value you clearly add to real estate.
Sally: Nice video, you have a great presence... Keep em' coming! We've been experimenting with our Video tags and descriptions (on YouTube)... Wow, can you get visibility (google juice) if you do them right.
This is a funny post . . . funny 'cause it's true. I walk into houses, open the closets and I'm amazed at the pristine towels all folded nicely, perfect height/volume. My closets are not messy, but they sure don't look that way! Even I think a household kept up in this manner is a good deal . . . they have a pride in ownership that shows!
I tell every one to clean out closets and cabinets and put it in rented storage. I always turn to the wife (a little sexist considering my husband does all the cooking in my family) and say "Pack away the pots and pans first, you'll have to eat out more."
I sold a house once and when we opened the walk in closet in the master bedroom the entire floor and I mean entire...was completely covered with flip flops! You could not even see the carpet! Me and the couple I was showing just burst out laughing! It looked like the shoe department at Walmart had thrown up in her closet! Hilarious!!! :o))))
Sally - EXCELLENT post!! I don't live an organized lifestyle until we are getting ready to move....then, half of what we own ends up in storage somewhere. It was so cool seeing you in a video and getting to hear your voice! I've re-blogged your post for the benefit of my potential customers.....GREAT advice!! Spot on!
Joan - nice point about the home inspector... I should have included that.
Lori - Actually we were boating for the MORNING f the 4th. We sail early iin the morning, before the power boaters come out.
Irene - sorry I didn't don a headlamp, but it was the best I could do under the circumstances.
TLW - thanks, girl. and likewise seeing you in your videos. Now where's my gun?
Rene - so what is the right way on the tags???? If you go to youtube, my Fair Oaks - My Kind of Town video is on the first page for "fair oaks" I thought that was cool.
Carla - my closets don't look like that eithr, except for the color coding of my clothes.
Vickie - getting a flip video camera is the way to start, if you want to.
roland - i would be happy for all sellers to see this (!)... specially the ones in Fair Oaks.
Jennifer - yep my buyers certainly do.
Nyssa - you are welcome
Jeani - I once opened a closet and found black leathers, a whip and hand cuffs. I should have put that into my video.
Julie - I love it about the pots and pans. good point. and my husband cooks half of the time....
coleen - Thanks for the re-blog... the more the merrier.
Bob & Carolin - Definately a battle zone in some homes....
Your video message is so on point. You got the message out in less than 3 minutes in such a non-judgmental way that is sure to keep down the defensiveness of the seller.
Hi Sally! First, congrats on another featured post...way to go! You never know what is going to draw attention! Good video...buyers (and agents) should really pay attention to this one!
Nice work on the video, Sally! I always tell sellers to keep just one season's worth of clothes in the closet, and then pack (or donate) everythin else.
Melissa - It's always hard to see yourself on screen, but encouraging words are appreciated.
John - That's good advise.
William - so will we be seeing a video of yours soon?
Chris - I agree.
Michael - I wonder why video posts haven't been more featured? They're fun, but take a fair amount of work. I really need to work on making them shorted, and more to the point. I tend to wander a bit. I don't want to do them from a script, so do them pretty off the cuff, which I like, but then I repeat myself too much.
Great tips Sally. Remember the cartoon Tennessee Tuxedo? My closet looks like Dr. Woopie's!! lol~ Good thing I don't have to sell or move right now. :-))
He could have used a tornado in that closet for sure! lol~ I just checked youtube to see if I could find that episode to share, no luck. Keep the video tutorials coming, they're great Sally.
