Motivational Monday

Looking back at the very first post that I put on Active Rain gave me inspiration.

This is the photo that I had in that first post (of course, at the time, I called it a blog & only got 4 comments - 2 of which were family).

    breast cancer awareness bill board

Looking at this photo makes me realize --- "wait a minute, I had cancer"   Really, being a breast cancer survivor has opened up my life to what is really important.  I do actually forget that I had
pink ribboncancer -- until, I undress -- and then it is very clear.

For those who were not reading my posts back in Oct. 2008, Boyd & I made the decision to a have a double mastectomy.  It was the best decision that we have ever made. No, I did not have cancer in both breasts -- we just didn't want to have to worry about it coming back.

I have a friend who was diagnosed at the same time as I (3 and a half years ago) -- she chose to go the chemo route and not the mastectomy -- I regret to tell you that her cancer is back -- now in her bones and lungs -- not a good thing.

Who knows if she had had the mastectomy whether it would have come back?  Only God knows that.  But, I believe that the mastectomy could have saved her life.

How is this inspirational?  I feel that I am an inspiration -- an inspiration to others who may be going through the same tough decision.

Today, I am wonderful, wonderful (truly) --- feel great, can do anything that I decide to do.  To be around me, you would never know that I am a breast cancer survivor unless I decide to preach about making these tough decisions.

Please, if any of you out there are in the process of trying to decide what to do, please have the mastectomy (mastectomies).

Liz,

You (and your post) are very inspiring.  I can't even imagine all of the courage it takes to make such a decision.  I have a family member who went through the same thing, it must have been about 20 or more years ago, but I know she does not regret her decision either.  I think I would have to make the same choice if I were in those shoes.  Thank you for sharing such intimate moments in your life in an effort to help benefit those of others.

Emily

P.S. I was wondering of you ever thought of starting a local Facebook group as a gathering place for people in the Charleston area who either have, had, or know people with breast cancer...to share their stories and get local support.  I think you would be great at hosting it!

Hi Liz,

Many think I have had breast cancer but I have not...I've worn that ribbon to represent all cancer but also in memory of Karen George..and how I was deeply impacted as a human when REALTORS in our area..rallied to support one of our local REALTORS.

I don't know the affects of breast cancer but am well aware of others...we as women must take good care of our bodies and that would include routine breast checks and doing what needs to be done with the least amount of trauma to our bodies.

You have always inspired me! :)  that will never change.

Great info and a hard decision to make. My grandmother lost her life to the decision to not have the procedure. I had read your post earlier and didnt comment as its bad memories for me. Cancer in any form is a nasty thing and has taken 6 of my loved ones from me in the last 2 years.

HI Liz,

My family has a large ongoing history of breast cancer. My grandmother died from it, and everytime I hear a story like yours it saddens me. I miss my grandma... :( Anyways, crying aside, thank you for the inspiration, and you made one hell of a hard decision.  I wish you a happy and prosperous life, and my thoughts and prayers are with your friend.

You ARE very brave Karen. I applaud your willingness to share your story in hopes of helping others. As a man I can never understand the difficulty in making such a decision but I do know that to have someone who has been there and KNOWS what is like is such a great comfort to anyone having to go through this situation.

Liz - God bless you for sharing your message.  I'm sure you will be a source of encouragement, support and information for many women (and men) that face this crisis.  I am so happy that you beat the beast, that you are a strong survivor and a true advocate for women to face their fears and make informed decisions.

If you had not said you were a survivor ... I would never have known.

Continue to inspire ... you are living proof that the battle can be won!

I hear your wonderful, wonderful ringing in my ears.  Your story is an inspiration.  I have heard of other women who had a double masectomy based on family history and the diagnosis of cancer.  I hope your story gives other women something to think about and consider.
