"Hoping will do no good. Get in motion so that you don't have to hope. You'll know that you can climb the mountain because with every step, that's what you're doing."

Yesterday, I was leisurely reading the Sunday paper and I just happened to see my horoscope. I rarely read this stuff, nor do I put a lot of faith in them. But OMG - it was another lightening bolt moment. I had been thinking about this very thing for the last few days and wondering how I was going to get to the top of my hill.  Well you know the old saying goes ‘ask and you shall receive' - I clearly was on the receiving end for sure!

"Hoping will do no good. Get in motion so that you don't have to hope. You'll know that you can climb the mountain because with every step, that's what you're doing."

My steadfast journey with Active Rain began early 2009 while I was re-covering from foot surgery.  For the past 20 years or so I had been an avid hiker, hiking 4 to 6 days a week and loving every minute. Well, ok let's be real - some days it was hard to start the trek up the steep part especially in 100 degree weather!  Yes 100+ degress, is that crazy or what? That is  CRAZY PASSION!

What I loved about the hiking process was the creative, inspired thoughts and ideas that came somewhere along the hike each day - especially while sitting on top of the hill looking down on the valley and at my home below. Thoughts and ideas flowed effortlessly for my real estate firm. Some days I'd almost run down the hill so I could get the projects in motion!  I miss that part of my life with a passion!  If you are an athlete I'm sure you know what I'm talking about -it's like the runners high.

I have been unable to hike for almost two years due to an injury.  I gave up for awhile thinking I'd just have to accept that I could no longer hike like I used too.  At some point I said - that's crap!  Figure it out and do whatever you need to do and make it happen. So I had the surgery - which really didn't solve the whole problem but it's a start.  I am a long ways from being back on the top - especially now. 100 degree weather is NOT the time to start back up.  That would be just plain stupid! For now, I'm biking indoors working my way up to the elliptical - soon I know  (notice I DID NOT say  soon I HOPE). I have my goal set for next fall for being back on top.

Now are you getting that this post isn't just about me hiking?  As a broker I have seen a lot of discouraged agents the last few years.  Finding ways to help them hold on and to keep on trecking no matter what has been my passion.

"Hoping will do no good. Get in motion so that you don't have to hope. You'll know that you can climb the mountain because with every step, that's what you're doing."

My agents are used to me saying - What are you doing?  Are you doing the right stuff?  Are you being honest with yourself?  What's holding you back?  What direction are you headed in?  What is the goal?

Take action today!  If you do the right stuff now - it will pay off in 45 to 90 days. Stop hoping your business (or life) will take off and get in motion. One step at a time - will get your real estate business (or life) back on top of the hill. Fuel your passion and have a lot of fun along the way.

Are you ready to hike to the top with me?

On your mark, get set, go!

Hi Anna What  wonderful blog and beautifully expressed ..the funny thing ..MY daughter is a hiker.  Her dream has always been to hike the Appalachian trail.  Last year she went on a 3 day hike  with A friend and her friend's dog.  In the middle of the hike her hiking boots gave out and she had to duck tape them together to finish.  aNYWAY THANKS FOR THE ENJOYABLE READ

Hey Anna . . . what's your sign?

;-)

(June:  That's funny, because yesterday I saw a scientist on PBS use duct tape to hold up something that fell off a space shuttle -- or something like that.  I wasn't paying too much attention.  But, I remember him saying this: Always bring duct tape!)

Anna.....nice post and nice point. If one is following a path, then hope is not a word brought up.  Sadly, most people don't want to follow the path, and end up focusing on hope.  Oddly, most don't want to follow the path and one has to wonder why........?

Hi June - I just popped in on your post a bit ago!  Oh....yikes....I've had that stuff happen hiking the grand canyon (we live close here). Duck tape goes everywhere - including space as Carla mentioned!

Hi Carla - Duct Tape - Be sure to bring it, will you!!

Hey Tim - Thanks I appreciate your feedback. I know sometime I just shake my head and wonder where they lost the passion - or maybe they never had role models to show them?  Now - where was I?  Time to get back on the path!  See at the top!

Anna,

Just got the AR daily newsletter and you're featured! Might take a bit for the gold star to show and be on the dashboard, but you're front-page news with this great post.

I LOVE hope - but to me it has an entirely different meaning.  Most people think of hoping on par with wishing, or worrying. But I think of hope as an expectation that what I'm reaching for, I will attain.  Hope is on par with Faith and Love, as in, "Now remain these three - faith, hope and love."  The thought of giving up hope makes me sad.  Hope is what keeps me putting one foot in front of another.  Hope, in its traditional sense, is a beautiful, life-giving thing. You'll have to forgive me for disagreeing with the 'wisdom' of a horoscope.  :-) I know where my Hope comes from!

Anna - Timely post for me.  I've been hoping for a few things to go together, acting nominally, and am ready for action.  Hoping, after all, only emphsizes what isn't.  I like the message - thanks for the awareness.

Hi! Anna,

I sincerely "hope" that you are back on top of the mountain by this fall.  You must be an inspiration to your agents and a great help in keeping them on track.  I do think hope and motion go hand in hand, but you can't "hope" more than you "work" to make things happen.

"Never give out while there is hope; but hope not beyond reason, for that shows more desire than judgment."  William Penn

Goodmorning Irene - nice to see your smiling face as I log in today!  Wow.....that is exciting news.  I so love this activer rain journey.  The more I learn the more I realize I don't have a clue!

Hi Joetta :) I understand where you're coming from and I get that part as well.  What I found intriguing is the idea that people HOPE.....but then don't take action.  Action is needed too.

Hi Jim - Amazing how we all need to 'hear' this stuff from time to time isn't it.  "hoping for a few things to go together, acting nominally"  that's it in a nutshell!  Good luck and get out there and kick some major you know what today!!!!

Hi Dana - thanks I will be back on top - it is my belief and so it will be. I'm gong to be discussing this very subject at our sales meeting this morning and I know they're going to be into this one!

I like what you add - you can't hope more than you work - perfect addition!

Hi Anna, What a great inspirational post.  It will surely get me moving up that mountain! :)    Hiking is great fun.  I do hope you get to do it again soon; and I hope you get total healing on that foot!  This real estate can be fun also.  I will just keep moving in the forward direction, and hope to get some more sales...have a great day!

Just to clarify, I do think there are situations where hope is all you have, and there is nothing you can do but hope, but that is not what we are talking about here.  I am refering to our real estate business, not other life struggles or illnesses.  But even there, a little "hope" goes a long way in keeping the forward motion.  I believe I can, therefore I continue to hope...and work!

Hi Ginger - thanks for adding me as an associte!  I'll do the same a little a later as I've got to teach this am. Thanks so much for your kind wishes - much appreciated.  We're all in this game of life together and is sure helps to have support!  Real estate is fun - I love real estate!  Actually I love the people and helping them making their dreams come true - and my agents dreams too!  What a fun place to be, et!

Dana - Well not so sure about if hope is all we have.  Two years ago when the market crashed to dead roll I could have hoped it would be change or I could have taken action to keep things in a forward direction looking to the future. I am forever glad myself and my whole team took that route. Hasn't been easy but we kept the 'hope' and we took massive amount of action.

I believe I can, therefore I continue to hope...and work!    Believng is Seeing!  Love your quote!

2 features in the newsletter...WOW~!  I dont think I had seen that before, unless it was someone from Active Rain!  Do you work for them now??

LOL

You know, I went to a training seminar once, that was all about 1st meetings with Realtors you want to do business with, and other things....and I FOLLOWED their advice to the letter about 10x....ONLY 3 out of 10 Realtors I met with in the Madison Wisconsin area...had a business plan into the year...that included a monthly goal, as well as an annual goal!

I was shocked.  I am an avid Mountain biker, and LOVE hiking...I can definitely see the relevance.  If you are tired, or hit a wall....set up a marker in your mind to aim for...once you hit it...find another marker!  RE is the same really...Except, we have to learn to "evolve" with the evolution of our job responsilities.

This is a nice job on this post!  I liked it alot!  Goal setting in any line of work is ultimately what is going to set you apart from the competition!

Thanks!  Darin

That is always my theological dilemma.  I trust God to be my provider, but I know he doesn't want me setting around on my butt.

I agree 100% - Hope is a good start, but you have to get off your butt & do something!!

Hi Darin

You are so funny!  Work for AR?  OMG I feel like the more I've learned the less I know at this point!  And I'm loving that aspect!

Yes it is amazing that many agents don't have a business plan?  Even a simple plan is better than nothing. If you dont know where you're going - you'll end up where ?

Yes exactly - get clear on the next marker.  I can't tell you how many times I've done that hiking especially when it's really hot.........the next marker is SHADE!  Evolution is key - especially this last 3 years.  Before we had stuff on auto pilot and it worked like a charm.  Well - we all know what happened to that plan.  Squat!  Next!!!!

Thanks for your thoughts and feedback - very much appreciated Darin :)

Hi Jenny - good to see your smiling face!  Thanks for the kind words.  It's funny how some days words just flow - and other days, not so much.  Yup I'm a hiker, skier, golfer - you name.  I grew up playing sports from HS on and I miss being on the MY mountain (but not so much in summer)!

Gene - no he says get off your butt and quit whinning and make yourself useful and contribute something great!  Oh wait - that was my Dad!!

Hi Dan - action and believing and more of the same over and over and over. JDI.

Thanks William for your feedback.  Much appreciated!  DO and DO it well!

Anna, so true.  I have never been a big fan of "hope" and think of it as "frosting on a turd."  If you have something that is not working----no amount of surface coating is going to make it any better deep down.  Best to bake a new cake:)

Al - yup!  You can't win if you don't play!

Charles - what?  You must be one of my brothers!  Frosting on a turd!  Made me smile.....cause it kind of is just that!  On with the new cake!

Hi, Anna. What a great way to start my day! You are a pleasure to read. I like to say that taking action is hope on wheels. When we take action we have made a decision, and therein lies the secret. Thanks for writing this. You have a new subscriber in me.

Anna - Very inspirational, and I know you will work your way back to the top.  My passion has always been playing sports, but my knees, lower back, and feet (of all things) are making it more and more difficult for me to continue.  When you hurt for three days after playing, you begin to wonder if it is all worth it, but I wouldn't want to be doing anything else.

Anna,

It looks like you reached the top of the mountain, one step at a time.  You're reward:  two featured posts!

You are not only inspirational; you are so right.

I am a cyclist and do most of my thinking while I am biking.  I leave the talking to the girls behind me and focus on what I am  going to do.  Too bad I can't take notes when I have these great ideas.

Hi Anja - thanks for stopping by!  I totally get 'taking notes' while you're in the zone. Hiking affords one that -cycling - well maybe some kind of recording device?  They're alwasy such inspired thoughts and ideas - so many things have been created from that place.

Shane - Absolutey believe it and make it happen!
