What is the American Dream?

The term was first used by James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America which was written in 1931. He states: "The American Dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.
Prosperity is the state of flourishing, thriving, success, or good forture


Some say, that the American Dream has become the pursuit of material prosperity - that people work more hours to get bigger cars, fancier homes, the fruits of prosperity for their families - but have less time to enjoy their prosperity.

I would say most of us will dream from time to time. We can also dream when we are awake and not even realize we are dreaming. You hear folks say, well I once had a dream that I became a million dollar realtor five years in a row, was recognized in magazine articles for my achievements. You will hear builders express how their dream became evident in the number of homes they built. You have heard folks indicate a dream to win the lottery and that dream came true.

As Americans I would say most of us dream of home ownership, the opportunity to own your own business, the dream to become a physician or nurse or lawyer. The dream to provide for your family with a nice home, nice car, good education.

What and where would we be if we didn't dream or if we didn't follow our dream?

Driving back from Rockport Texas yesterday Ceil and I were discussing how fortunate we are to live in this great country. With the number of folks we saw on the hi-way in nice automobiles, people waiting in lline to get into the restaurants, pulling nice boats, having fun at the seashore...multiply this by thousands you would not believe when they say this country is in a recession. We saw smiling faces, sunburned kids and people enjoying life.

I say if you dream, follow that dream and never look back. That dream is what has allowed us to live in the best country in the world. Yes, we have a few obstacles along  the way, but not anything we can't mend. If you see someone that has lost their dream reach out and give them a hand to get back on the "road again". We are all Americans and that is what we do.

    What a really super post y'all have written, and a post that is truely from your heart.

    I'm not sure if the things that. I've done in life was because of dreaming of them or not. I can say that that I have never once in my life ever looked back, and have never regretted for one minute anydecision that I have made. And I can sure say, I've never turned my back to anyone that has needed help.

    Shirley thank you for stopping. Ceil and I have had many dreams through the years and we are fortunate that many have come true. We are thankful for our family and the dreams we have had for our son's and their families.

    Dale - We all know you are a good man. Seems we are all having good dreams and many have come true; maybe not all at once but sometimes take a little longer then we want to wait but will come true in some form. You are a good man and we all know you are a man of character.

    Michael: Wow just looked at the time, 4:19 a.m., you are up early most mornings so I guess you have to do some quick dreaming at night.
