Keep an Up-to-Date Home Inventory
Do you have enough home owners insurance? Do you have a home inventory list? If you already have one, you should update it. Having an up-to-date inventory of your belongings will be invaluable, should there be a disaster.
To get started, follow these tips to create an inventory:
- Walk through the house, room by room, carrying a blank notebook (or copies of inventory sheets) and a digital camera.
- Describe each piece of furniture and other valuables. Document make/model/serial number/color/condition and quantity. Provide information about where or from whom the object was obtained.
- Be sure to open closets and drawers and describe the contents. Everything counts: including food, medications and cd's!
- Take photographs of all items, including the small things that you can group together.
- After you download all your photos. Make sure you label them with the date and a description of the items shown.
- Keep copies of these photographs and inventory sheets stored at another location, such as at a relative's house in another state.
- Keep a copy of all sales receipts, cancelled checks and credit card receipts as proof of purchase and the item's cost.
The information-gathering process may reveal that you need additional insurance, or may want to add a floater policy to cover such objects as antiques, jewelry or special items.
