In various places, Blogs have been defined as personal journals or diaries; a means for the "Every-person" to be able to voice their thoughts and opinions.  But here's something to remember, as pointed out in today's Sun-Sentinel  in South Florida, as a blogger you become a "potential Editor-in-Chief".  In other words, and let me make it clear, I am not an Attorney, you could be held libel for what you "say"/blog, and therefore be sued.  Damages have been awarded.

There is a Media Bloggers Association formed in 2004 that has also developed the first media liability insurance for bloggers in 2008.  The article also talks about a course:  Online Media Law: The Basics for Bloggers and Other Online Publishers   to learn more about blogging and your rights and responsibilities under the law.

                                  What does all this mean?

Well for me, it reminds me of what my High School Principal, Mr. J.P. Rodgers, used to say,

"A Word Said is a Word Dead."

Once you hit the ole clicker/mouse   your words are out there for the whole world to read.

Sometimes we forget that we are making a public written statement that is going out into the world.  Your post is a good reminder that our opinions could back fire!

Kathy,

Have you read lately how many politicians etc. have been getting bitten on the ass by things they posted? It's out there for ever with a click of the mouse.

Kathy - I try to use my words wisely, because I know they are out there for the whole world to see.  You never know what may happen in the future, and who may be looking for stuff about you on the internet.  It is wise to watch what you write about.

It's so true, once you hit the button, there is no getting it back.  Even if you delete, someone may have copied it or forwarded it, there is no guarantee that you can ever erase it.

"Team Newton"-it's too easy to be lured into a false sense of "comfort" with all the social media tools out there and forget that we're putting it out there for anyone to see.

Terry and Troy-I remember back in 2005 when MySpace was big in the college crowd, young adults in particular were warned of posting pictures of themselves in all their glory at their college parties, etc because it could backfire when their future employers searched the site before making any hiring decisions.

Sharon-As wonderful as our high speed world of the internet is, it can be very unforgiving.  Email addresses have to be precise to be delivered;whereas a hand addressed letter will be delivered even if the zip code is wrong.  Hitting the "send' button releases your information and who knows where it goes from there!

Such a good point! Always think twice before hitting "Post" or "Send" - if you wouldn't want your boss to read it, it's probably not a good idea to post it!

Never thought about it before. But, i guess, now it is a good time to start thinking. Thanks for writing about this. I am sure there are people out there who have no idea about "potential problems"

Great post. One thing people also forget is that just because you join a private forum/group/network, doesn't mean it will always be private. You never know who saves screen shots. And it doesn't take too much work to figure out how to backdoor your way into a private forum. So if you posted a picture from college 10 years ago on a private board with friends, it doesn't mean that picture is long gone. With a little determination, it can be found. So we have to be careful what we say and do online because it is always there in cyberspace.

Annie-I can't tell you how many times even hitting the "enter" key with my little pinky has made me cringe.

Veronika-it's just too easy to feel comfortable and relaxed when we're making these comments, blogs, posts in the comfort of our own home or office cubicle.

Stephanie-good point.  I remember warning my niece when she was in college and posting on MySpace that future employers would be able to look back and view any drunken comments or pictures or rants, etc that she might post.  Still hold true.
