Slip Slidin' Away at Daytona with NASCAR

Well, Daytona did not disappoint!  NASCAR's Coca-Cola 400 on July 4th had fireworks that nobody can actually plan for.  You just have to understand that this is what happens with restrictor plate racing.  Tony Stewart, Jimmy Johnson and Denny Hamlin were pretty dominant throughout most of the race.  The first "big one" happened smack dab in the middle of the race at Lap 77.  It appears that Kasey Kahne may have bumped into the back of David Stremme, making his car wiggle right into Jamie MacMurray (#26) and causing a huge pileup and a couple more wrecks.  It managed to take out several of the guys in the top 12 in points.  All-in-all, 13 drivers were involved in the wreck: Brad Kaselowski (#09), Jeff Gordon (#24), Kevin Harvick (#29), Brian Vickers (#83), Ryan Newman (#39), David Reutimann (#00), Clint Bowyer (#33), Kasey Kahne (#9), Michael Waltrip (#55), David Stremme (#12), David Gilliland (#71), Dale Earnhardt Jr (#88) and Reed Sorenson (#43).

But, that was NOTHING compared to the finish.  Tony Stewart's pit crew were the ones to beat.  They took the lead off pit row 8 out of the 8 times Tony was on pit row.  The last few laps had Kyle Busch leading the race after "Smoke" had lead for much of the latter part of the race.  As they rounded the final turn of the final lap, Tony and Kyle raced hard to take the checkered flag.  Tony tried to move around Kyle and Kyle blocked him at every turn.  When Tony went down to try to pass Kyle, Kyle dove in front of him.  Tony swerved to the right and Kyle tried to block him again.  But, this time, Kyle didn't quite make it and ended up getting himself turned into the outside wall.  And, if that wasn't enough, Kasey Kahne ended up digging right under Kyle's battered #18 to lift him up all the way on top of Kasey's hood.  Once Kasey's car shook Kyle's car off of it, Kyle hit the wall again on the only side of his car that had yet to get hit.  Tony took the checkered flag and Kyle ended up finishing 14th.  Craziness!

Big finish at NASCAR's 2009 Coca-Cola 400 in Daytona FL    After Kyle Busch hits the wall, Kasey Kahne's car nudges him in the air and onto Kasey's hood for another beating at the Coca-Cola 400 in Daytona on July 4th, 2009.

To Kyle's credit, you could see how angry he was getting out his car.  But, he refused to give a comment about the race.  In the past, you could pretty much expect good ol' "Shrub" to run his mouth off.  That is one rumored reason he was let go from the Hendrick stable a couple of years ago.  Instead of saying something he might later regret, he went to his trailor to cool off.  Poor Tony felt bad about the way the race ended.  It wasn't the way he wanted it to go and apologized publicly to Kyle Busch in Victory Lane if anything Tony did may have caused the wreck.  I, personally, think it was racing.  They both raced hard.  Tony did what he had to do to get around Kyle and Kyle did what he had to do to block him.  Unfortunately, it ended up the way it did.  The most important thing I think everyone should remember is that Kyle walked away from this accident.  Eight years ago, Dale Sr wasn't so lucky and he had a wreck that looked so much less harsh.  So, NASCAR has come a long way, baby.

The next race is on Saturday as well, July 11th at 8pm EST in the windy city of Chicago on TNT.  Don't miss it!

Heather - My husband and I watched the entire race.  Was that the most unbelievable finish you've ever seen?  Watching the replays I too agree that both Tony and Kyle did what they had to do to win but unfortunately for Kyle his block put him in the wall instead of victory lane.  I was relieved to see that he was able to walk away from the wreckage without any injuries.

That was what was the most incredible to me, Donna.  I am NOT a Kyle Busch fan in the least (I think he's talented but his head has become a bit big and his mouth tends to run away from him).  But, I certainly wouldn't want to see any harm come to him.  And he got hit hard...three times.  The fact that he could walk away from the race means that NASCAR has made some incredible changes in safety.  Thank goodness!

By the way, if you're a NASCAR fan and not already a member, please visit NASCAR Nation to join up.  We have a fun group.  I write a wrap-up of each week's race.  Although, I wasn't able to last week because I just couldn't get around to doing it.  It may have something to do with the fact that my boy Jeff Gordon had to settle for 2nd place in a rain shortened race.  But, whatever.  :)

Heather - Thanks for the invitation!  I've watched some NASCAR races over the years and even attended the Pocono 500 way back when. :)  The past couple of years my husband and I have gotten back into the groove of watching and even recording the races if we're not going to be home.

I'm not a big fan of Kyle either for just the reasons you mentioned and don't have a real favorite right now though I'm leaning toward Joey Logano even though he's a rookie but he's from Middletown CT and I have to cheer for a home town boy! :)

Heather - NASCAR is one of those things that I wish I could enjoy, but it is all left turns!. I come from the days of formula road racing and never could make the adjustment to oval tracks, even Indy.

Welcome to the group, Donna.  I only started watching about 6 or 7 years ago.  But, I quickly grew to love it.  I've got my eye on our pal Joey, too.  I think he may be the next big thing (after Jeff Gordon retires, of course).  :)

I'm so glad you've been busy with real estate, Toula.  That's a wonderful reason to miss NASCAR!  Jimmie's a fantastic driver.  He could win 4 cups in a row.  Who knows?!  If you want to keep up with the races that you miss, join NASCAR Nation.  I do a weekly wrapup of the race there.  I hope you join.

I agree, Jared and Amanda.  That was quite a finish!  The best part was that everyone walked away.  NASCAR keeps improving the safety.  Hopefully, we'll never have to see someone die again (RIP Dale Sr).  Please join NASCAR Nation to keep up with the latest news and talk about your favorite driver.  We'd love to have you!

It was an amazing finish, Richard.  That's what you look for in a race, as long as your guy isn't involved in the wreck, anyway.  If you're a fan, join us over at NASCAR Nation.  Even if you're not a fan, you may become one.

You know what, Mike?  I used to think that, too.  But, it's really more like chess and football at 160+ mph.  There's so much strategy involved as well as skill of the drivers that it hardly ever is determined by who goes fastest around the track and makes the best left hand turns.  It's also very much a team sport.  If your pit crew is lousy and the crew chief doesn't communicate well with the driver or know what he's doing, you can have the best driver in the world behind the wheel but come out in the middle of the pack.  The driver is the QB, the crew chief is the coach and the pit crew and spotters are the rest of the field.  Then, of course, you have the personalities.  Boring, it's not!  :)

Now I want to know if you watch NASCAR to see the cool crashes or if you watch it because there are so many hunks in racing. 'Fess up.

Also NOT a Kyle Bush fan, but didn't want to see him get hurt, but it never hurts my feeling when his BIG HEAD doesn't cross the finish line.  I felt awful bad for those he also wrecked by attempting an impossible block.  Didn't mind at all when he lost his engine this weekend either.

Oh man, Tammy.  I gave Shrub too much credit last week when I thought that by not answering the press when he was so angry, it indicated he was growing up.  Not the case.  A week later and he STILL is blaming Tony Stewart for wrecking him.  In fact, if you look at the video, you see that Kyle blocked Tony not once, but twice.  The second time, Tony didn't move.  Kyle, in fact, ran into Tony, causing him to turn and wreck.  So, Kyle's big head gets him in trouble again.
