I found a new blog today totally by accident and boy am I glad I did! I live in a relatively small town; population (w/in city limits) about 20,000. I've had my website MapleValleyRealEstate.com since about 1998 and since 1999, I have written all it's content and except for a a very brief period, have been my own "webmaster". It's been hard work but I'm now #1 in most organic searches for the terms "maple valley real estate" and fall on page 1 for most other terms.

So imagine my surprise (and disappointment) when I stumbled upon this (non-Realtor) site and begin reading about my community through this other author's eyes....only to realize, Whooaaa Nelly.....this sounds VERY familiar.

It's been awhile since I've written my "Area Information" page so I had to go back and check. But yep, a direct cut and paste job. I've had this happen once before years ago and went to an attorney right away. In hindsight, I felt I should have called the other agents first and given them the opportunity to do the right thing.

So that's what I did. I left a comment on this blog and we'll see what the author does. If the content isn't changed I will be outing the (industry related) company here on AR as well as contacting my attorney.

Why do people always try to take the easy way out?

And yes, I've installed Copyscape now. Had to learn the hard way didn't I?

Great post Colleen!  In a way, it's a compliment.  Copy is the sincerest form of flattery.  BUT...copy and paste! I mean come on...did they not think they would get caught!  Man!  The nerve of them!  Glad you saw it!  Good eyes!  I hope they take it down OR give you the credit for the write up and link it back to your site or something!  Now that's an idea!

This has happened to me a half a dozen times already. One time by a well known national Real Estate blogging site. It is amazing the crap that goes on.

Colleen, sorry to hear that happen. I've been thinking about being proactive on this, did you subscribe to the copyscape, copyscape premium, or copysentry? We're just looking for options. Thanks.

Zero tolerance is now my policy.  Why give them an easy out.  Hit them up for damages right away!

The old saying is "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"; however, before you copy someone's work you should at first ask.

Colleen - The easy way out can become very messy with lawsuits, attorneys and such. I think it was the right thing to notify them, and congratulation for taking the high road.

Thanks for your post.  I've learned lots from it.  I had no idea about copyscape and will go check it out.  It is so sad that some people are so lazy that they have to steal material from others.  I hope your cease and desist email works.

Geez, what is wrong with some people?

You would think that you could write something and let it be without having to check over your shoulder for the masked cute and paste dude, huh?

Well, good for you for taking matters up!
