Do we sometimes get in a habit where we assume things just because of everyday, common sense, practice and habit?
For example, I went to get gas to fill up my car. There are always (usually) three kinds of gas, Regular, Plus, and Premium. I always get Regular as that's what goes in my car. My mom always gets Plus because that's what goes in her car.
At EVERY gas station I've ever been to, they either go from right to left of left to right. So, if I was wanting the lowest grade, I would go to one end or the other. I looked at the right side first and saw the 93...
I lifted up the nozzle and went to press the button. Which button would you press for the lowest? If I had already seen the 93 was on the far right, you would then press the button on the far left for the Regular...
My hand reaches out, and my finger is right there about to press the button, when I just happened to notice the number looked weird. I'm not sure I ever noticed that 89 was the Plus number since it's not in the middle of 87 and 93, but it looked weird and I caught myself at the last nano-second.
The Regular gas was in the MIDDLE!! Why was it in the middle? Are they just trying to wake people up to stop assuming things from everyday practice? Were they thinking they could get a few extra bucks from people pumping the wrong gas into their cars?
Are there things you do just out of habit and you might make a mistake if things were switched up on you one day?
