Our different four-legged friends in Boston

If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and leave a comment.I used to love going to Disneyland when I was young not only because of the rides -- which I can't do anymore -- but also because of the horses. The police used to ride around on their horses to check up on everyone there and to keep order.

I don't know if Disneyland still has horse patrols, or mounted police, but we do down here in San Diego, both in Balboa Park and at special events. The City of San Diego has tried to put an end to them in light of the city budget deficit, but it seems that everytime they do, the whole world here has a fit. We seem to love our horse patrols.

Mounted PatrolUnfortunately, over in Boston, the city's horse patrol unit was disbanded recently due to their budget cuts. Their twelve horses were given new homes, with five of them being leased to the New York City Police Department, four going to the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office, and three being returned being returned to their former owners. Boston's mounted patrol unit dated to 1873. There is hope to restore the unit in the future.

Here's hoping that Boston gets their horse patrol unit back together quickly for I've seen the look on children's faces when they get up close to one of those other four-legged friends.

One more casualty of the blasted economy, and one I had certainly never heard about before.  Budget cuts are all I'm hearing about latey.

As a child I remember seeing the mounted police in Houston. I don't think Austin has "cavalry division. Austin does have police that patrol 6th Street (entertainment/bar district) on bikes!

I have to go to balboa park on my next visit as I have never seen a mounted police.  I had my only ever trolly ride in San Diego too.

Jim - I always like traveling to cities where they have mounted police patrolling the cities.  Too bad the budget has put a hault to this.  Hopefully they will come back in the future.

Having been in the horse business for many years, the ones used in mounted police work are what we refer to as "sacked out well".

Hey, Tony and Darcy - Too often the goodwill ambassadors of our cities are the first to be cut during budget battles.

Hey, Janna - It's budget this and budget that. Is that better than short sale this and short sale that? Or foreclose this and foreclose that? LOL

Hey, Betina - We used to have some bicycle cops here, but I think they have switched to Segways.

Hey, Tammy - Hopefully you're coming out for the NAR Convention in November.

Hey, Diane - The best thing about the horse cops is that neither the cops nor the horses mind if you pet them (the horses, not the cops - LOL).

Hey, Troy - We saw mounted police in Boston when we were there back in 1996. Other than San Diego and Disneyland, that's the only place I ever saw them.

Hey, Richard - I wish you had told us a little more about how they came up with "sacked out well."
