Can you identify this flower

A couple of months ago my neighbor brought me this green plant, with little prickles along the edges of the leaves.  She said that everytime she walked past the plant or tried to water it she got scratched by it. So, she asked if I wanted it.  Being a plant lover myself, I was happy to take it.  I love outside plants, and typically I can keep them alive and thriving.  But, don't give me an inside plant, I'll have it dead in 2 weeks.

Well, I noticed that this plant began blooming one flower at a time. They started out like the first picture and as the weeks have progressed the flowers have been blooming these beautiful purple and pink buds.  And, even the color of the flower has changed to pink. (I know the lighting on these two days was a bit different -one picture was taken when it was sunny and the other when it was pouring rain.) They are really gorgeous.  I have done some research, but have not been able to find out what type of plant and flower this is.

Does anyone have any ideas?

That's incredible, Sandy.  A chameleon flowering cactus?  I don't know what kind of plant this is, but how cool that it not only blooms such neat looking flowers, but they change color as well.  Neato!

Hi Sandy, It looks like some kind of agave- but I've never seen such a beautiful flower on one!

Hi Sandy, it's a bromeliad or "aechmae fasciata", also sometimes called silver plant.  It's great to live in Florida where we can actually grow them outside!  http://www.plantoftheweek.org/week002.shtml

Sandy, that bromeliad is gorgeous! How lucky you are that you can grow that and keep it so healthy in your part of the country!

Heather, Funny, it is like a cactus, chameleon - you described it beautfully.

Hi Mary, Isn't it a beautiful flower.  This plant is just gorgeous!

Silvia, I knew someone would know!  Thank you so much.  I have checked out the link that you sent and I have started ready up on them so I can be sure that I am properly caring for this plant.  Again, thanks tons!

Hi Lou, Silvia said it's a bromelaid.  It's really beautiful.

Hi Tony, The birds eye view is great.

Hey Caren, Well, thanks for letting me know what it is.  Silvia also knew what it was. I searched all over the internet trying to find out info about it.

Paul, I feel fortunate to have adopted this unwanted plant.  There is a second flower beginning to bloom that is equally as gorgeous as the first one.

Sandy,

I have no idea what type plant this is, but it is beautiful.  I'm sure if I owned it I could manage to kill it.

Hi Richard, Silvia and Caren told me that it is a bromelaid.  I had no idea.  But now I should have a better idea of how to care for it (although it seems to be thriving right now).  You don't have a green thumb, huh?  I do alright with outside plants, not inside though.

I think those are cannabis flowers and you've been set up by your friend. Let me know how it turns out....

Hi Cheryl, Never thought about it that way - perhaps a beautiful gift from a beautiful neighbor!  It would be just like her!
