We advertise our listed homes on Craig' List. It works, it gives the home

more exposure on the internet and we have had calls from serious buyers

who found our listings there.

BUT............

Lately we have been getting bogus emails from Craig's List just like the one

below:  This one is from Kristen Karalis (yeah, right!)

The name looks valid but people don't usually write exactly the same

thing when they inquire about something.  These messages are all identical.

We have had a rash of fake buyers say they were buying other items also,

apparently to harvest email addresses.

At least that is all I can figure out. If you know why someone is spending hours

thinking up fake names and baiting thousands and thousands of ads, please

inform me.  If you are getting these, don't bother answering them, just delete

them like I do.

I've been getting a lot of bogus emails from Craig's List as well.  People asking me if I still need them for a job and crazy stuff.  Even came across a fake home rental listing on there.  When I tried to get more info about it for a client, we found out it was a home for sale, not rent and the person advertising it for rent had nothing to do with the home!

On the flip side, I got 2 great calls from new listings this week from Craig's List, so I will continue to weed through the junk to get the good ones.

Sincerely,

Kathleen

I am getting so many of these, and the past week it has really gotten bad!  I've never gotten a valid email response from any of my Craigslist listings.  If I ever did, it would probably get lost in all the spam!

Funny how that works, some useful tool is developed and a few individuals come up with a way to take advantage of a situation.

Kathleen, We have had good results in the past but recently it seems to be all bad.

This is a very good question Terri.  Thanks for posting it.  I am looking forward to hearing what others have to say about these bogus emails.  Are you posting your email address on the listing so it is readily available to be picked up by spammers?

Ann, I would quitusing it except we have had good results in the past. It may just be a phase it is going through.

Terry - yep, have seen a number of these too. Like Ann, I have never had a valid email response on a listing on Craigslist. A lots of folks I have talked with who have searched for rentals have had plenty of complaints on that end of things, too.

Richard, I don't see the advantage of the fake messages . Must be some people have a lot of time on their hands.

Dan, Our e-mail is so available it is hard not to get spam but my delete button is nearly worn out.

Jeff, We have had some items sold from Craig's list but you're right very few valid responses.

My son ("the computer guy") just informed me that spammers will search for email addresses on the net and then send a bogus email to you to see if the address is still valid.  If you respond to the email, it lets the spammer know that your address is still active and then your email address will be used to generate more spam, and BTW, sold or given out to other spammers as well.  So be careful, do not respond to these emails or you may receive more spam to boot.

I'm sorry to hear this. I hope the situation improves, because CR is a great tool. I say weed through the crap until it (hopefully) works itself out.

You get a lot of exposure free, but open yourself up to lots of junk, scams, etc.

Dan, We heard that also and have not responded but I'm sure some have and it is a way for them to increase the e-mail list. Be careful out there.

Lori, We have thought it is a good way to gain exposure to our listings but if this continues we may have to rethink it.

Edward and Celia, I guess we all need to evaluate the risk for the potential rewards.

I'm seeing a lot of scammers swiping my listing photos and then putting the home up for rent on Craig's List. Fortunately, most people are too smart to fall for something so stupid. I mean, they go to the house and see my For Sale sign in the yard and call me.

Yeah, they are just trying to get your email address.  From what I hear, they can sell them to marketing companies etc.  Wouldn't you be happy to have a list of Realtors' emails if you were a marketing company?

I'm sure they are just looking for valid e-mail addresses that they can add to a spam file. That is my guess to what they are up to.

Todd, I guess they are look for addresses and enough response to make it worth while.
