The fate of the BBDs

If you have been a faithful reader or visitor of lvrealty.net, you know that we are dog people (the photo is probably a big clue as well).  Jacqui and I are active in rescue in the Las Vegas area and have rescued and placed hundreds of dogs over the years.  In this month's People magazine, there is an article titled Dog Discrimination.  In it, it talks about plight of our canine friends in the US, and about one particular group: BBDs.

What is a BBD?  It stands for a big, Black dog. "It's two strikes," according to Jacque Lyunn Schults, director of the ASPCA's shelter and outreach program.  Because dogs over 50 pounds are more complicated to keep and require more exercise and their dark fur is more menacing to people.

The full article is in the June 11th edition of People magazine.

For anyone out there looking to adopt a dog from a shelter, please take a look at these wonderful animals. You might just find your next best friend. -Charles

Charles, what a wonderful service you provide for your community by putting yourself out there in the rescue of these little souls. Hard to believe that we live in time when that is even necessary. It's called responsibility at the minimum.

I read something about BBD's on the website of one of our local dog shelters.  I think of black labs and lab mixes being so loving and trainable it surprised me.

I used to wear almost all black but having lighter colored (a brown and white dog and then a tan and white dog) has changed my style.  I thought I should have a black dog.

Bigger dogs can be a challenge, I know the smaller dogs get adopted quicker.

Big dogs are so much easier to train IMO. As long as you exercise them they are great. Think that big dogs get a bad rap due to stupid owners that think it's ok to put a 100 pound dog in a 1 bedroom condo and never exercise it. Anyways I love my BBD (German Shepard) and he is great with kids.

I grew up with BBDs (black labs, actually) and have never quite been able to get used to the idea of anything smaller!

I think the same is true for the fate of adult cats - the kittens always get adopted first, but the adults get passed over.

I always tell friends looking to adopt to adopt an adult cat or dog - kittens and puppies are cute, but they are always more in demand.

I'd take a BBD anyday over a little yappy thing.  Don't get me wrong, I love dogs and have had all shapes and sizes.  The best ones I've had and still have are the BBD's.  Unfortunately many people see little as less time consuming.  Nothing could be further from the truth. It never ceases to amaze me how our society can discriminate against one kind of dog or another, without giving any thought to who they really are.  Well, we do that with people too, don't we?
