Pathways to Professionalism: Respect for Peers

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty Atlanta Partners

The following are some professional courtesies that every REALTOR should strive for. Using good manners is important in this business that is built on relationships. These 12 suggestions are all ways that show respect for peers.

1.      Identify your REALTOR and professional status in all contacts with other REALTORS.

2.      Respond to other agents' calls, faxes, and e-mails promptly and courteously.

3.      Be aware that large electronic files with attachments or lengthy faxes may be a burden on recipients.

4.      Notify the listing broker if there appears to be inaccurate information on the listing.

5.      Share important information about a property, including the presence of pets; security systems; and whether sellers will be present during the showing.

6.      Show courtesy, trust and respect to other real estate professionals.

7.      Avoid the inappropriate use of endearments or other denigrating language.

8.      Do not prospect at other REALTORS open houses or similar events.

9.      Return keys promptly.

10.  Carefully replace keys in the lockbox after showings.

11.  To be successful in the business, mutual respect is essential.

12.  Real estate is a reputation business.  What you do today may affect your reputation - and business - for years to come.

Very good list. It is very important to note that the respect and professionalism of an agent trickles down to clients as well. I had buyers put in an offer and we never heard back from the other side. I called the listing agent the morning the offer officially expired and he did not take my call. (He'd take every other call leading up to our offer.) I called him again at the end of the day... no response.

Not only did he offend me but he offended my clients who were very confused by the lack of response. If the offer was not acceptable they could have rejected it or countered. But to just be brushed off... Not cool.

We eventually heard back, but my clients were so upset, they wanted nothing more to do with him or his listing and we moved on.

Whether you get a ton of replies to this or not, the point behind your post is bigger than you may think it is. Having been in the business for 28 years, there are a few that have hung around over the years as have some in the building industry.  It is quite interesting to see over the years, that people's reputation, in general, rarely change.  Thus these agents and these builders all have reputations that have carried with them for many years...even though they may have changed.  So making that first impression is much larger than people realize.

Anne, if all REALTORS followed your suggestions we would all be better off. I like the one you had about the file sizes and don't send things too big. Very good one. Many REALTORS forget that one.

Hi Anne, It seems this list would be known, and common courtesies would always prevail.  But item number 2 seems to have escaped some agents lately.

So simple - so overlooked.

Great reminders, and I try to do every one of these, and love it when I have a transaction with other Realtors who approach it the same way :o)

Cheers Anne !

Hi Anne:

It's so true...

Especially; Return phone calls promptly...It's so simple.  I do it and I expect the same in return...

When I have to call an agent, 2-3 times to get a return call, is ridiculous.

I think you hit the nail on the head!

Respect each other, none of us could do this on our own. We are all a team as agents in the same regions. There is no reason to bicker with the other agent. Together, as a team, we will all get alot more done and look so much more professional.

There is nothing worse than a good seller, good buyer, and arguing agents! What a deal killer!

Can't we all just answer the phone, respond promptly, or at all! And sell a house...

I know, let's all just get along!

Nice list - you could call them the Golden Rules of Real Estate.  It would be so simple if every agent would live by and practice the common courtesies you have listed.
