What is it? Where is it? What is it used for?

Sorry, Frodo, it's not a hobbit hole!

Hints?

I took this photo within 50 miles of my house...

Let's see how the Activerain "Name that Photo" group can do with it. Care to take a stab at identifying it?

Entrance to Rio Grande Nature Center Visitors Center

(If you've never been to the Land of Enchantment, an exact ID could be a toughie, but maybe you can come up with a more general description...)

Must be one of those "extreme homes" I see on T.V.

It's either a tunnel to Mexico or a pet Iguana door.

Cynthia and Ginger, it's neither a tunnel nor the entrance to a home. It IS an entrance, though!

Laura - It's an entrance to a mine or a cave.

Good guess, John, but it's not a mine or a cave either...

I still liked your idea of a pet iguana door :)

Nobody's quite gotten it, so I guess I'll have to disclose---

It IS an entrance, to the Visitor Center at the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque.

Laura,

Looks like you have been spammed in comment #13.  You might want to delete it.  Regarding the entrance, I'm glad you provided the link!  Thanks much. I enjoy your photography.
