Microsoft Operating Systems long the standard and “bully on the block” is getting a new competitor with clout: Google. That is right! Google announced it is going to enter the OS market in 2010. Mashable’s Ben Parr broke the news with his timely article: “BREAKING: Google to Launch Operating System.” Let’s take a look at what Google has to say about Chrome OS.

Hi Connie,

If you go to Google and input Chrome OS there are tons of new articles. I don't have the most detailed description so for more info try that approach. Thanks for commenting Connie!

I think the success of the new browser is a longshot. Linux has always been free, uncomplicated ( for the most part) and originally came on most netbooks and it still has a tiny marketshare. (Most netbooks now come with XP-no one wanted Linux) Microsoft will release Windows 7 before Chrome .... and from what I've read, it is a great OS and will erase the sad memory of Vista very quickly.

I think Google has an uphill battle on it's hands to get any market share for their OS.

Terry,

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one. Google's plan and focus is to provide a free Operating System with functionality, security, and easy of use. Combine all of that with portability for the mobile user and you have a solution that can spell trouble for Microsoft.

The biggest piece to Google's glaring market advantage is the fact that SaaS, the cloud, and other emmerging trends point to the continued discontinutation of software as a licensed commodity. All of this is inline with Web 2.0 and the democratization of information. As a former software sales exec, Google's move is the beginning of the end of the way entrepreneurs will utilize software in the future.

If you examine Microsoft's projects it's easy to see they themselves know the software licensing and product business model is in trouble. They are trying to compete with Bing, move into video gaming, and any other income producing technology as fast as possible.

The uphill battle lies with Microsoft as they attempt to re-engineer a dominant business model that is on it's last legs
