There's not a weak link in jolly all-star cast of this buoyant, blissful Shakespearean delight. director Daniel Sullivan's approach is to go easy on the outdated wordplay and the slapstick zaniness, and this Twelfth Night (in 18th-century costumes) plays out with admirable clarity. Anne Hathaway, Audra McDonald, Raúl Esparza, Hamish Linklater, David Pittu, Jay O. Sanders, Michael Cumpsty, Julie White and Stark Sands conjure a rich sense of wry wonder and romance. They roll giddily through this classic comedy, and we happily follow.
