Thus far, you guys have been able to name everything I've thrown at you, but can you name this creature?

austin tx insects bugs

My husband said it was a dragonfly, but we've seen many dragonflies while on the boat, and this is no dragonfly.

It nicely let me take a few pictures and then as soon as I put the camera down, it flew away.

What am I?

Donna,

Is that a locust?  Every few years these creatures re-appear.  i'm not sure but the wings have the appearance of some type of fly, locust but, etc...

Donna - I don't think it is a dragonfly.  It could be a locust.

Hi Donna, I have no idea other than  it looks like like it might be a relative of the fly. Whatever it is the photography is great!

LOL This is the 3rd one you have thrown our way. You have quite a few guests in Austin. It looks like some sort of wasp, but I am not a bug expert as you know from the previous posts. I'll follow to see the answer.

Hi Donna... whatever it is, I don't want to be anywhere near it.  Ask Trey Thurmond in College Station... he photographs all sorts of insects and posts them... I bet he'd know!

I'm very disappointed!!  With the last two, people knew immediately what they were.  This doesn't look like any locust I've ever seen. Locust are fatter and have some kind of shell as they shed the shells. This is skinny and long...

Maybe others will find this and help.

Donna,

I agree with Steve; however I would mail it to Trey and if he does not know he could take it up to A&M, and someone there would know.

No I have no idea!  But I swear I saw something similar in PA!  But maybe not.  Just similar.  I think what I saw was smaller.
