As a Knoxville relocation specialist we have the pleasure of working with many out of town Buyers. Buyers who have never visited Knoxville, TN before are often confused and in awe of one of Knoxville's best known landmarks- the Knoxville Sunsphere. However, the lack of knowledge about the Knoxville Sunsphere is not just with out of towners, as many local residents have no idea what it is as well.
So what exactly is the Sunsphere?
The Sunsphere is a 266 feet tall steel tower that contains a 75 foot diameter globe with gold colored glass that was designed for the 1982 World's Fair that was held in Knoxville TN.
So what is inside the Sunsphere?
The interior (golden globe portion) of the sunsphere contains 5 levels. During the 1982 World's Fair there was a restaurant for visitors to enjoy a 360 panoramic view of Knoxville- including great views of the river and Great Smoky Mountains. Currently, on the 4th floor of the sunsphere is home to a 360 observation deck/museum that has great views of Knoxville and is FREE! On 5th floor is a quaint little bar/ light restaurant that is smoke free and offers great priced beverages and homemade fresh foods. This area can also be rented out for events and is available for catering as well. The other remaining floors are homes to
area businesses.
Where is the Sunsphere?
The sunsphere is located on the Old World's Fair Park which now includes the Knoxville Convention Center, the Knoxville Symphony Outdoor Amphitheater, Veterans Memorial, World's Fair Sprinkler Park, duck pond and fountains, the Knoxville Museum of Art, Fort Kid, and the new World's Fair Park Playground (just opened July 8, 2009).
So next time you are looking for things to do in Knoxville TN head on down to the World's Fair Park and check out some of the fun and free things that Knoxville has to offer.
After visiting and playing at the World's Fair Park head over to Market Square which is filled with even more things to do in Knoxville Tn including some great places to eat.
