LIVING IN THE COUNTRY CAN BE EXCITING.

Lovettsville

THINGS ARE USUALLY PRETTY QUIET IN THE LOVETTSVILLE COUNTRYSIDE.

The most exciting thing going on in front of my house is my next door neighbor riding up the road or back on horseback.  Or, occassionally, a neighboring cow or two will get out and feed on the lawn of my other neighbor's yard.  "Much tastier than that dry old stuff at home and I don't care where I walk."

Western Loudoun County is very rural and wildlife thrives.

THIS MORNING WAS MORE INTERESTING.  I heard an unusual sound from my front window this a.m. and when I looked out, to my amazement, a neighbor's Lab was in the middle of the road barking at a Fawn.

THE FAWN THAT COULD
What proceeded was something I had never seen.  The Fawn was not at all intimidated by the Lab.  In fact, they were doing dance whereby the Fawn would take two steps forward and the Lab would back up.  Then the Lab would take two steps forward and the Fawn would back up.  The Lab barked and then the Fawn made a "bleating" sound, not unlike a sheep.  I don't know that I have ever identified the sound that Deer make before, but I'll know it from now on.  I've been in the country a lot in my life time, but most of what I see of Deer is the white tail flapping as the animal runs away.

I grabbed my trusty Canon and started taking photos of that extraordinary sight from my front door.

STOPPING TRAFFIC
Sooner or later, a vehicle was bound to come along, as it did.  Poor guy.  He stopped his SUV to wait for the spectacle of the Fawn and the Lab.  However, they weren't going anywhere, so he backed up to my driveway to turn around and go out of the area from another route and BACKED INTO THE DRAINAGE DITCH.  Poor guy.

SOME FOLKS AREN'T VERY GOOD AT BACKING UP

The Fawn and the Lab were still at it as my neighbor spun wheels trying to escape from the ditch.  About 10 minutes later, the Fawn took off across the next property and was gone.  The Lab started barking at the poor guy with his SUV in the ditch.  15 minutes later, another neighbor tried to pull him out with his pick-up truck.  I'm sure he'll be getting a new transmission next month.  10 minutes later a tow truck pulled him out and the adventure was over.

Lenn, I enjoyed this story! Couldn't help but chuckle as to how the SUV guy will explain this to his insurance agent.

" ... well, you see, there was a dog and a deer in the middle of the road, so I backed up ..."

Wow! What excitement!! The fawn probably wanted to play. Really good story and great pictures. I too live in the country and just love it. My funniest story was a little poodle chasing a 400lb wild boar across the lake!!! Swimming! Willie (the poodle) made it to the middle of the lake and started going down. I was getting ready to jump in and rescue him but he caught his second wind and wisely turned around and made it back to the shoreline. The boar made it to the other side and got away.

Thanks Elainne.  I had to laugh at him.  I'm so glad it was a "HE" that backed into the ditch.  If it had been a "SHE", we'd never hear the end ofit.

BRYANT.  I've seen those wild Boars in Florida.  They are not to be messed with.

Lenn thanks for writing a post that's so interesting that it's worthwhile to share with non-real estate folks. I am going to have my family look at it today, esp my 16 year old daughter who is crazy for animals.

We live in the suburbs (lot sizes 8000-10,000 sf) but are very, very close to sparsely populated hills and a huge park that stretches into them. There's a lot of wildlife there and sometimes it comes down to us: mountain lions, raccoons, deer, bobcats, possums, coyote and I don't know what else (luckily I haven't heard of rattlesnakes coming down).  A few months back, a mountain lion went a mile past our house and into the Cambrian Park area of San Jose. Unfortunately, when the wildlife and game people find a misplaced ML, they are not confident that sedating it would work fast enough, so the big cat is always killed.

We have seen deer (does and bucks) wander down our street in the evenings and nighttime. What they're looking for we don't know, but it's a family joke that they're trying to find a party.

I sure feel for that poor guy who ended up in the drainage ditch!

Never a dull moment around your house!  I was loving the photos of the fawn and the lab, but laughed out loud when I saw the pickup over the edge.  So much for taking a short cut!

Thanks for the laugh!

Thanks for commenting folks.

Mary.  The wildlife here are almost free to roam.  It isn't unusual to look out my front (office) window and see dear walking up the road, or a cow.

Kristal.  The poor guy could't back up.  I watched him backing up and he kept getting closer and closer to the edge of where the road meets the driveway and he just didn't stop.  Even I can back up.

Thanks Jim.  I LOVE LOVETTSVILLE.  Right now I am on my way to get interior photos of a home some folks in Oregon are interested in and the listing agent put no interior photos on the listings.

Never fear, Lenn is here.

Missy.  It WAS funny.  I couldn't get over that little Fawn stomping at that Lab.

Great story Lenn.  I'm glad you thought to grab your camera.  Great pictures.  Especially the guy in the ditch. Very funny.  Wonder how he explained that.

I love country life.  A couple of years ago we had a bear walk through the yard.  That's just a little too much wildlife though..

That's a gutsy little fawn.  If you'd videotaped it you might have gotten on one of those "stupid pet trick" shows.   I guess Chevy can't use those photos to advertise their 4x4....

Lenn--I loved this story! What a great way to showcase your area in Lovettesville.  And you couldn't have paid for a better punchline than a guy getting stuck in a ditch to cap off the story! I live in the country too and we see weird things all of the time but never have that camera ready. My hat is off to you! You were ready--Thanks for sharing!

He sure looks like a baby.  And where is his mother, letting the little guy out on his own??

I live in a rural area and the deer are getting braver.
