Jaw Dropping Video Stats

In preparing to teach a seminar last week, I set out to research the latest video numbers.  What I found, was surprising!  Video use on the web is rising at an astronomical rate...a rate that has never been seen before on the web.  

According to comSource:

*Visitors spend an average of 75% longer on websites with video 

*In April 2009, Americans watched 16.8 billion videos online.  That's a 16% increase from the March 2009.

*Google sites reached an all-time high of 107.9 videos viewers in April 2009.

*85% of consumers go online first before making a purchase (this includes homes)  This number rises in younger demographics.

 

Below are graphs for the top 20 websites in different categories.  It shows the use of video throughout their sites. 

 

-ESPN Sportszone, Fox Sports, NBA.com, NFL.com, NHL.com, etc. 

 

 

-Jokes.com, The Onion, I Am Bored.com, CRACKED.com, etc. 

 

 

 

-NewsMax.com, PoliticalCartoons.com, Slate Magazine, People's Daily Online, etc.

 

 

 

-Parade Magazine, Reader's Digest, Time Magazine, etc. 

 

 

-Kraft, Betty Crocker, Campbell's Kitchen, The Pillsbury Company, etc. 

 

 

Here's how the Top 100 did it: 

  • 79% of the surveyed companies have placed their Web videos deep into their Web sites, 3 clicks or more away from the home page.
  • 44% use online video in an advanced manner: contextual integration of videos, variety of video players, call-to-action tied to the video.
  • 58% offer a full-fledged “video center” comparable to a corporate TV channel.
  • 51% give access to such video center directly from their home page (one click away).
  • 32% display video ads for their products in the site; 20% display video ads on their home page.
  • 59% offer full-screen video option.
  • 1% have video on autoplay (i.e. video starts as soon as the user lands on the page).
  • 3% open video in a new browser Web page.
  • 4% use a pop-up window to display video. Video formats: 77% use Flash video, 6% use Windows Media Player, 3% use QuickTime, 0% use Real Player. (The percentages don’t add up to 79% because some websites use more than one video format)

Hey Tara, Those stats definitely show how important video is and what a greater opportunity you have to capture the consumer's interest if you're implementing this media. I need to use this more I know!

I know video is so important - whenever I do a new local piece, I place it on a page of my website and try to have something new about every two weeks when the spiders visit my site.  Great information.

Lane-  We were presenting Cherokee County Realtors and businesses.  I think the organizer got part of the presentation on camera so I'll see if he's posting it anywhere.  comSource didn't have real estate websites in the numbers I found but I am going to keep on looking :-)

Margaret-  Thanks so much.  I'm glad to see these stats are elsewhere...it really gives a great picture of how to propel your website.

Charlie-  No problem.  I love gathering info...it's the reporter coming back out in me ;-)  

Ray- It is true that many agents are not fully taking advantage of the video revolution.  The SEO results alone should be reason enough for many to get off the fence.  I think we'll start to see more implementation in the months and years ahead as technology becomes increasingly more user friendly.  

Kevin-  Can't wait to see your Emmy Award winning performance :-) 

Irene- It really is interesting to see how different segments of business all have a common thread of implementing video on their sites. 

Brian- ABSOLUTELY!  The rewards of video are vast...increased SEO results, a unique marketing platform, increased awareness to the consumer, perception of market leader in your area, varied ways of use, etc. 

Anne-  You doing an excellent job with video!  I think we can all do more for our business...it's just finding the time!! 

Cathy-  Good for you!  You have the right idea :-) 

Terri- I'm with you...not surprising but amazing to see how many websites on an international level have implemented video.  Even the majority of magazine websites have video which speaks volumes!

I have some people tell me that video matters.. others not so much, so I think it might be segment dependent.  I think video is important in real estate (money where mouth is)... but it would be nice to have stats.

Tara - why do most use Flash? I consistently hear how Flash takes so long to load if you have it on your web site and it is not recommended - or is this something different here?

Great stats!

Video on a website is being adapted like actual websites were in the 1990s.  Most didn't get it.....  a few saw possibilities but weren't sure where or how to get started.... and a few saw the internet way back then and immediately saw the potential.  They didn't really understand the internet, they didn't really know how it worked, they didn't really know how it would help their business... but they just KNEW they needed to be there.

I see the acceptance of video exactly the same way. 

Ask anyone who put their business online in the '90s or early part of this decade.  Ask them how their website is doing today.  Ask them how well it ranks in the search engines today.  

The early adapters are reaping the benefits today in leaps and bounds while everyone else is finally coming into the fold ("Maybe this internet thing isn't a fad...")  Ask anyone who is putting up a website today for the first time - the amount of work, time and effort to be found is INFINITELY more than early adopters ever had to deal with - and it's still an uphill battle!  (I have several websites that I've had for 10-14 years - they are ALL on page one for top keywords - and they've been there since before Google was even a word!  And guess what?  I do NOTHING to those sites to promote them - nothing.)

When video becomes the norm (and I absolutely believe it will be), that's when everyone else will be jumping in.  I guarantee in 5 years or less, if a viewer goes to a website without video, they will react the same way as if they went to a website today that had no graphics and no photos - just text. Unless it's really compelling information, they will click away immediately. Dull.

With most web technologies, it definitely pays to be an early adopter, even if many of the benefits aren't realized until later.  

I have customers that have over 100 real estate video tours all over the web that have been up for over 4 years.... and they're STILL getting top rankings and inquiries. Success on the web is based on your footprint - the more breadcrumbs out there pointing back to you, the more likely you'll be found!

Lane-  I will keep looking for specific stats.  Thus far, I haven't found any but can tell you this: On the corporate level, most brokerages are heading in the video direction.  Coldwell Banker was the first to jump on board with Coldwell Banker On Location.  The SEO results are the main reason why: the spoken word is now searchable through Adobe giving videos more weight through Google, there is increased time on the site from having video (consumers stay 75-percent longer)...again, increasing SEO results..., the increased content helps, as does the increased visitors to your site from having more content.    

Again, I'll keep looking and post whatever I find.

Sharon- Most people use Flash because it is the most universal format for programs to play.  In other words, few people will have trouble viewing the video in this format regardless of their computer or program.  Most of the time, Flash "elements" (such as the clouds moving on our site ReelProductionsTV.com) can take a long time to download if they are overdone on a page.  Also, if you have a slower internet connection it can stall as well.

Tara; Thanks for the stats! Yes, they are jaw dropping. Any idea how many Real Estate sites have video? Pretty low in my area. Thanks for the info. Inspires me to get back to adding more video.

Eileen- Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of stats that relate specifically to real estate.  It may because this industry is still adapting to this medium.  I'll keep checking and keep you posted!
