ceiling speakersI recently had some guests over for dinner.  When I gave them the obligatory "house tour", the ladies remarked that my home was "just like a model [home]"

But it's not what you think.  I am not writing this post to brag about my so called "model home", but to tell my readers about an inexpensive home improvement that will surely remind buyers of a model home when the time comes to sell.  (Is it still called "curb appeal" when it's indoors?  I doubt it...)

Also, this is probably my favorite home improvement we've ever done-- and we've done a bunch.

But I digress.

My husband recently purchased some speakers from Amazon.com to mount in the ceiling.  (Yes, Amazon does electronics too.)  If you are interested, you can click on the speakers above to see exactly what he bought.

His original intention was simply to add surround sound to our living room, but he ended up wiring our entire home for sound.  We have no kids, so our house is relatively small at 2000 sq. feet.

When we had our guests come to visit a few days ago, we had some light jazz playing quietly all throughout the house.  That is what prompted the model home comment.  I have to say, it really is impressive, especially considering its cost and time involved.

We needed eight speakers to thoroughly wire the house for sound.  As I mentioned, he purchased the speakers from Amazon.com.  Eight high quality speakers are only $300 at Amazon; and we thought that was a good deal.  We used two for "surround", put two more in the hallway, two in our bedroom, one in the tiny laundry room and one in our home office.

From Amazon:  The high-efficiency design allows the HFW6R to operate on as little as 10 watts of power, but it isn't sheepish -- this speaker can handle the heft of a wide range of home theater and stereo receivers (up to 100 watts).

These speakers should be all that ever you need, unless you want to have the volume high enough to summon the police.  But really, my husband forced me to watch Star Wars with him as soon as they were installed and the surround sound was very loud and dramatic and impressive.  I was actually able to tolerate the movie and everything.

Installation is fairly simple.  He cut holes in the ceiling and just popped them in.  (Other than dust falling on his face, it seemed to go pretty quick.)  He then went up into the attic and ran the wires from all eight speakers down the living room wall and into a "plate."  There is only one very obvious place for a TV / stereo set-up in my home, so the next buyer will simply plug right in and have incredible thoughout-the-home surround sound.

The reason I said that this was a $700 home improvement is only because I was being conservative.  It actually only cost us $300, plus my husband's time.

We also called around to find out how much professional installation would be and it ran about $60 per hour.  Since my inexperienced husband did it in about six hours, I figure a pro could do it in a lot less time.  But even if the professional also took six hours, that would be $360 for him or her and $300 for eight speakers.

That's about $660.

Also, it should be noted that adding only two speakers for movie surround sound would be an excellent improvement in and of itself.  That would only cost you $75 (for the speakers) and about $120 for installation.  So...about $200 to turn your living room into a movie theater.

I promise, you will love this if you do it.  Watching movies at home is so much better!  ...as long as Michael doesn't make me watch Star Wars again.  I get it:  Use the force already.

P.S.-- Yes, I know that an appraiser will not add any value to a home that is wired for sound.  However, this tiny improvement will definitely impress potential buyers.

too cool - it beats cranking the stereo while cleaning so I can hear it from one end of the house to the other :)

What a great idea. Though I don't know how I feel about my husband cranking up Star Trek. But to be able to hear Frank Sinatra or AC/DC through out the house might be worth the risk. I can see this being a nice feature to help homes stand-out in the crowd.

Karen, I let the men of the family talk me into surround sound. I agreed on the grounds that the little white mini Bose speakers were used.

I am now enjoying my small, not mini, black speakers.  I could have throttled them all!

Nice idea to throw on the "honey do list."

New construction builders in our Dallas Metroplex itemize the cost on pre-wired surround sound at $1500 - $3000.  And to wire it at the building stage is a lot easier than what your husband did so you saved a ton of $ and made a great impact on your quality of life.

Chris-- Black?!?  You've got to be kidding.  You need to throttle them all!

Tina-- I agree.  Great impact on the quality of life for somebody who enjoys movies and music as much as I do.

Karen, I love this idea.  And you're right.  It would go over big with buyers down the road.  As for doing just the living room...Florida's too hot.  If you're going to go up into the attic where it's 120 degrees, you may as well bring extra wire and do all the rooms.  Can I come watch The Lake House at your place?  I'll bring the popcorn!

Karen - what a small investment to get so much perceived value - thanks for telling me about it.

Karen,

We have 5 speaker surround sound with a big box speaker  hidden behind the TV.  It shakes the floor when you watch a movie with sound effects.  Total overkill - of course my husband thinks its great!

Good thing my wife doesn't blog.... otherwise, I wouldn't have time to blog mysel.

Great idea on the speakers..... And I bet those would do very well in a home staging.

We have surround sound also, in our den and have speakers on our patio but I'll be honest I never thought of putting it in the laundry room.

Karen, we did the same thing with my new master suite and new office.  Unfortunately that is as far as we have gotten with our remodel.  At least two rooms feel like a model home.

BTW - Where I live in Walnut Creek, California, 2000 square foot is considered good size and will cost you 750,000 and up.  Different realities I know.  We are nuts here!

Karen.... sounds great and has given me some ideas. But curious, are you now working part-time for Amazon.com?  ;o)  <teasing>  Thanks for sharing this...

Karen..I have to TOTALLY agree with you that a sound system wired in your home is one of the most inexpensive, but best, upgrades you can do. It doesn't have to be some expensive, fancy system, but, like you did, modestly priced, good quality speakers mounted correctly.   My wife and I have a log cabin in the Blue Ridge, GA mountains, and almost ALWAYS have some soft "new age" music playing in the background.  Guests that stay at our home always feel it adds to their "mountain experience"!

Karen,

You are such a wealth of knowledge in so many different environments. The only problem I would see with that surround sound is if you had teenagers (and you went on vacation:)

Karen, Your sound staging is a sound investment. Way to go. I would send this as a hint to my hubby but he complains of getting too many long messages on his phone. What a sissy, huh?

We already had speakers in our kitchen and living room so when we finished the basement we made sure to install ceiling speaker surround sound and you are right, what a difference!  Plus it's a nice perk to buyers when they are looking for a home.

You are so right about the interior curb appeal.  Many buyers are tech savvy and want to have a home that is wired for gadgets.  A movie playing in the "theater room" can turn into a sale.

Thank you Ann.  I don't know.  I just collect "public domain" images and, occasionally, I get to use them.  Most of my posts use the same pictures over and over though.
