WASHINGTON— The Texas Department of Transportation will receive a federal grant worth $7,200,000 to purchase a new ferry boat for the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced Tuesday. The new ferry boat will allow for expanded passenger and vehicle ferry service between Port Aransas and the mainland.

“This new boat will improve ferry service by allowing for expanded operations and reducing delays in the Corpus Christi Ship Channel,” Sen. Cornyn said. “Ferry service provides a critical connection to the mainland and the fastest evacuation route for area residents during a hurricane.  In addition, this transportation link is important for boosting local economic growth. I commend the area leaders who worked to secure this funding.”

The funding comes through the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

Sen. Cornyn serves on the Finance, Judiciary and Budget Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee's Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.

The Austin American Statesman posted the announcement online.

Followed your post back from twitter. Wow! Never would have thought a new ferry boat would have been $7.2 mil!  So what will they name this one? The Cornyn? :-)

Thanks for sharing, Keith!

Thanks for the comment Ashley.  I wouldn't have thought it would be that expensive either, but that is what TxDOT is quoting.  Maybe you can take a ride on the Cornyn on a future trip across the ship channel.  Actually, they are all named after members of TxDOT management.

Dale...we currently have six, but it is an aging fleet.  The new design is a larger capacity ferry and yes they are expensive.

Keith this is good news. Maybe we won't have to wait quite so long next time we come over your way for a visit. It is allot of money but we have to realize the cost of everything is higher even for ferry boats.
