Party Talk: "What do you do?"

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with AuctionFirst

I must be an extrovert because I enjoy the question "what do you do" at parties and when meeting new people in a social situation.  Who would think there's such a career as: "I'm an auctioneer"?  You're a what??  Tonight I went to a 6 year old's birthday party and met some new families.  Someone asked what I did and when I answered that I'm an auctioneer, they wondered if that meant I do online/ebay stuff. No, I sell real estate at auction.  Everyone loves to hear a bit of chanting (bid calling), guess it's entertaining.

If any of you are thinking that adding auctions to your services - I encourage it!  Not only is it a wonderful addidtion to your real estate services, it's a heck of a more fun answer at a party, then realtor, attorney, etc.

It's tempting, but where do you get information on how to do it..... ? What price do you start with and what happens if the property doesn't sell for the price you were looking for?

I agree! Auctioning is one of those things that a lot of people do not know much about, so it would be great for conversation!

Great question.  It is a long conversation with a lot of answers.  Auctioneers love these questions and the conversations do draw a crowd.  A close second is my answer.

Many of the posters here don't know me, so this will be lost on them but .........

In the 90's my wife worked in the West Wing at the White House.  No not the TV show.  She's pretty darned smart.

Anyway, every once in a while she gave after hours tours to friends of friends, etc.  I went along when I was around.  One day we were walking around with some guy who was in soaps.  I am sure that he was important ????

His publicist was a "who do you know" person and asked what I do for a living.  My friend was along for the tour since he was in for a few days.  His response was wonderful.  He told her that he was unemployed currently, but aspring to be a cabana boy on the French Riviera.

She atually started talking about how interesting that must be.

Me- I'm in the liquidation business aspiring to be a cabana boy.

It's kind of like a waiter being an actor, but different.
