Frisco TX approves its new Walmart location at the North West
corner of Preston and Hickory Street. The Planning and Zoning Commision voted 4-3 on July 15 2009. It's a great decision for consumers and Frisco residents. However, not a very good move for Walmart in my opinion.
Currently, there are 3 Walmart locations that serve the Frisco areas:
- West Frisco location near FM 423 and Eldorado Parkway. This store also serves the neighboring city, Little Elm.
Typically most people in the West would go to this Walmart, if Walmart is their major convenient shopping. However, there is also a West Super-Target store right off Tollway and Eldorado. Hence, most residents in the central location go there for a couple of items. But when they want to do some major shopping done, the Walmart prices go further.
- McKinney Super Walmart location currently serves the McKinney and North Frisco residents on the east side. Again, it takes as much driving time to drive to the East and the West when most residents live near Preston Road - the major artery of Frisco.
- Super-Target store off McKinney Crossing at Custer and SH 121 serve the North Plano, Allen, Hunter's Creek Frisco, Turnbridge Manor Frisco and Craig Ranch McKinney residents.
- The Ohio Walmart location serves the largest population from Plano to Frisco. With its Ohio overpass, it has definitely made driving there alot easier. The biggest competitor is the Super Target off SH 121 and Preston. According to Target, this Target store produces the highest revenue in Texas. Its location within a short driving distance to Stonebriar Shopping Mall makes it very convenient, as well as serving the Frisco TX community by and large.
Based on my opinion, (again note that Walmart didn't ask me even though I think they should) the addition of its latest Walmart stores would hurt businesses from its current Walmart stores, not only taking away business from the West Super-Target location.
Don't get me wrong. I'm absolutely happy about the decision for me as a consumer. My home will be less than 5 minutes away and it would be true for many Frisco TX residents. The newly proposed Walmart just became so centrally located for Frisco. BEAUTIFULLLLL. I'm honestly thankful for it. So, I did not attend the Zoning Proposal meeting.
My Proposal: In my opinion, I think Walmart hopes to receive business coming from north of Frisco such as Prosper, Gunther and Celina. However, if that was the case, perhaps a Walmart location off Hwy 380 and Preston would be better. It receives the traffic from east and west of Hwy 380, Prosper, Celina and the cities north of them. Then the North Frisco residents have a choice to go to the East or West Frisco location and some might still go back to its original Ohio location.
I would still like for the new Walmart location to be on the South West corner of Preston and Hwy 380 to keep taxes back in the city of Frisco. Again, I think it may be a better split of target areas.

Note: This analysis is solely based on my opinion and no professional research has been made. It assumes Walmart customers (like me) will continue to shop at Walmart whenever possible and only make stops at Target or nearby grocery stores for non-major shopping purchases.

Frisco TX Approves New Walmart Location
In my opinion I think you can never have enough Walmarts. I like the fact that I can do all of my shopping in one spot.
