Feeding the purple martins on Long Lake in Portage Lakes Ohio is a curious event!

You scramble up some eggs, take a plastic spoon, and flip the eggs into the air so

that the birds can swoop in and catch them! It is awesome to watch! The birds

swarm the area to get their share of the eggs! The white gourd like orbs on the

pole are the bird houses for the purple martins! We encourage them to stay

because they are known for feeding on mosquitoes and that keeps the pesky

insects away! We love our purple martins!

Hi Caren, I have never heard of the purple martins before. This must be quite a sight to see.  Sounds great to keep them around if they ward off mosquitoes.

Hi Caren, I have never heard of feeding birds eggs-- the technique sounds very interesting, too, I would love to have a video of this.  Any bird that keeps the mosquitoes away is a great friend, indeed.

Sandy-They are a little bigger than a sparrow and have really pointy wings and are beige and light brown! They are fun to watch, because of their swooping in to catch the bugs and the eggs!

Craig-You are too cool! I always welcome you pictorial comments!

Mary-I should take a video of the birds eating the eggs! That would show them much better! I understand that they eat enormous amounts of bugs!

Debra-I am not sure how they figured out that the purple martins liked the eggs, but they really do! They love mosquitoes and we love them for it!!!

I have never heard of feeding them that way. If they are full of eggs, though, do they have room for mosquito dessert? LOL

I eat at the San Diego Zoo

Actually, Purple Martins do not eat mosquitoes.  They feed on larger insects like dragon flies etc.  Tree swallows are the real mosquito eaters not PM's.
