best job/worst job

My job stinks!!!!!   Okay, some of my previous jobs weren't glamorous, but I always did my best. I always tried to have fun and make others laugh. But what about having a job that you love soooooo much that you wouldn't give it up for any other job in the world. Well, I have that job.

Did I ever grow up and say that I wanted to be a loan officer in the mortgage industry? No, I don't think too many of us ever had a dream like this. I went to college for Landscape Architecture. Look what I am doing now.

I was having a conversation with a few friends last week which made me think how fortunate that I was to have fallen into this job, the mortgage industry. Just listening to how a few of them like their job, but can't wait until they get home, so they can leave their work behind them. One person that I met, owns their own landscaping company. He likes what he does, but doesn't love it. Me? I started August 17th, 1992 and for some years, didn't make much. But that didn't stop me because I just love what I do. I love helping people get into their new home. I love being so creative when someone else couldn't come through with the financing, in which it seemed that I had saved the day. Or when I was able to show someone another way to finance their home that 3 other lenders didn't either know how or take the time to show them. It's called pride and the love for what I do. I guess it shows at times because I can never stop talking about what I do.  I LOVE MY JOB.  What about you?

But wait..... my mom always told me to tell the truth. I didn't lie, but maybe I stretched it some. I said I love my job. YES, I do. And I wouldn't give it up. But.....  as I look back, I could have been happy with a few other jobs. One of them would be as a fireman. I always wanted to be one when I was little. I guess because education was always important in my family and because there was never a 2nd or 3rd generation firefighter in my family, ever. There was no legacy to follow. And because of this, it was just a childhood dream that I out grew. I am sure so many of us had these same dreams in which we out grew as we became older.

After thinking again, I could see why I would have picked being a fireman. Helping people. I guess it's in my blood and I am thankful for this. Then I think it's within reason to say why I joined the US Army for a few years. Helping people.

Do you love what you do?  What other job(s) would you have liked to have tried? And if so, why?

Great post Jeff and the pictures are great!  I can't imagine another job that I would like better! I knew I found my niche when I went into Real Estate so here I'll stay!!!

I have actually been fortunate enough to have two jobs I loved.

My first....food service. Gave me confidence and self motivation. The responsibility of running your own company and having others livelihoods dependant on you and your decisions is awesome!

Then comes burnout from the pure physical exhaustion.......

I have discovered that Real Estate has utilized many of the same skills, better emotional rewards and far less time on my feet!

Lisa.....  I know, I say it often. I hear so many others say the same thing, but I sometimes wonder. And I say this because of their actions towards their clients, not always being professional. Which goes back to my statement, taking pride in what we do. Thanks for your feedback and for the compliment.

Joan....  I had been in the food service for a good 20% of my life and I enjoyed it also, because I am truly a people person. But this job makes me actually feel good at the end of the day, especially when I helped someone that some other loan officer failed in their duties.

Tom... that is why I love purchases the most. Just because of that feeling and seeing the look in their eyes and on their faces.  That's very rewarding. But then again, I love refinances when I am able to get someone out of a jam, especially a jam that they were placed in because of another lender and what they did.... or in some cases, what they didn't do.

Hi there Jeff!

Well, I have a Bachelor's in Accounting..bean counting some people call it.  I know it is a far cry from Real Estate, but I do love my Real Estate job too, but I know when I am too old to show homes...you know when it starts taking me a half hour to walk up the steps of a home...that's when I have something to fall back on...Accounting!  I will still sit for my CPA one of these days! Great job on the blog again!  How was your weekend??

Glad you love what you do Jeff!  I think you have to love it, especially when it can get so depressing with all the negativity!  I was looking at your profile and saw you are in Cherry Hill!  I will be in Maple Shade (I live in San Francisco area, but my wife is from Maple Shade) for two weeks come Friday.!  I can't wait.  I am looking forward to a cheesesteak!

Eveline...... yes, I remember this from talking to you.  ;o)  And when you get old, you will need something to fall back on? Never, never say this. ;o)  In any case, thanks for that polite compliment.  And my weekend was fine, thanks for asking. And yours?

Jonathan...... sure, it helps to love my job when the chips are done.... when clients go with another lender because of a promise that I know will be broken at the very end or at closing. But such is life and will happen in most businesses.

In regards to your trip here to NJ....  give me a call. Seriously, maybe we can meet up one night or possibly inb Philly so I can show you that cheesesteak.  cell : 609-440-5133

Kris....... yes, I have had a few of those when at settlement also. It does feel great. Kind of like a fireman saving a kid and being hugged by a parent.

I love being a Realtor.  There are some challenging days, but in general there are far more good ones that tough ones.

Randy....  well, that's great, because I love meeting more and more people that truly love this business and genuinely mean it. And yes, there can always be challenging days, which I think makes us like this business even more. Especially when we can get the job done and everyone walks away with smiles. One thing that I have learned in this business, which I take personal, is that you can please everyone no matter how good you are.

I am one of the fortunate ones who Loves what I do.  And so sorry for all those that have to wake up every day and dread going to work.  If something doesn't draw you to your profession, you might stumble into it....but what a joy to love what you do!  Great post.

Jeff, I'm in the "love my job" club also. One terrific thing about the industry is that we all have such diverse background (BS in Biomedical Science) we can all bring a variety of attributes to the table. Your correct...not many of us grew up with "Loan Officer" as a career choice!

I love my job as a mortgage broker because it is always different.  Every client offers me a new headache (kidding!)

But I would also like to be a fireman or a ballerina.

Carole..... that's awesome. Love to hear that.  I am not sure if I would say that I am sorry for those that wake up every day and dread going to work.....  sometimes you have to do what you have to do. But on the other hand, you can always make your time and experience positive...  sometimes it just takes an open mind.

Mary..... what a great club. Maybe we should start a membership.  ;o) And I agree, I have met so many just on Active Rain that not only have some different backgrounds, but some are impressive. Just shows how this job can be so lovable.

Karen....  good for you. And sure, there will be some headaches....but just seeing the joy from those that you help out ways the negative stuff.

So...  a firewoman or a ballerina?  Two big opposites...  ;o)

Missy.....   I loved that cartoon also....   I wish I could have used it in another capacity.

So.... work for Google.  hhhhmmmm   They are big...creative... but I wonder what you would be able to do with and or for them?

Hey Jeff,

I think I might be able to get a beer or something on this Sunday in the Cherry Hill area.  My wife and her family have a baby shower, and I am not a huge fan of baby showers.  Would that fit into your schedule?  I look forward to it!

Jon

Missy...... hhhhmmmm...   I guess as long as they paid well. But of course, that could be a stress free job.  ;o)

Jonathan... I have no real plans as of yet, so Sunday could be good. I just sent you an e-mail so I'll be talking to you in the next few days.

A cross between Martha Stewart's and Barbara Walters' job would be ideal for me. (but I think being a mortgage broker is a blast).

Jeff-Me too!  I can't imagine that there are many other people that are as happy as I am with my life, family and career (but I know they are out there somewhere)  What makes this especially rewarding for me is that I have done it twice in my life:  Loved my job that is.  The Army family was (and still is) number one on my list.  There was nothing more rewarding than training to defend our country and then defend it when the time came.  You know this because you lived the Army life too.  And now that I have retired from the Army, I am still taking care of people.  Life is good and I think I love my job more than you :)

David....  so, you love your current job more than I do?    hhhhmmmm   I wonder how we could find out?  ;o)  And it's great that you have had two great jobs in your life.

Overall, Top, thanks for serving our Country.......
