Yogi Berra - Real Estate Sales Training

Words and Wisdom of Yogi Berra

Over the next month, I will be taking a brief look at the words and philosophy of Yogi Berra as it relates to real estate sales training.  The first installment of this Yogi Berra Real Estate Sales Training Series will start with the now famous quotation "When you come to a fork in the road, take it."

So, how does this Yogi Berra quotation relate to real estate sales training?  It is pretty simple.  Yogi Berra had only an eighth grade education and was not book trained - but his words ahd philosophy of Yogi Berra were simple and direct and reflect a great wisdom that describes how to make a decision in business.

Yogi Berra - Real Estate Sales Training

Take Action - Be Decisive

First, the fear of making a wrong decision or taking the wrong step can be paralyzing and cause one to take no action.  We have all seen real estate agents who are afraid of making a decision.  Whether it is embracing technology, approaching real estate sales as full time profession, joining a new brokerage, or something else, real estate agents need to take decisive action.  Yogi Berra was a believer in decisive action.  He didn't believe in regrets or second guessing and always looked forward and not back.  There was no such things as "would bes, could bes or should have beens."

Make an Informed Decision

Second, it is important to make an informed decision.  We have all known real estate agents who make their decisions based on polling others.  Others have difficulty asking for any assistance or advice.  Yogi Berra strongly believed in seeking out mentors and later acting as a mentor.  As a manager, he relied on his coaches for advice and assistance. Yogi Berra believed in seeking out those with more "life experience" or as he put it - people "with more miles on them."  Yogi Berra, however. didn't listen to the press, fans, or to a lesser extant owners.  He made his own decisions based on his instincts and the best interests of the club.  It is important to seek out information and then make a decision relying on your own instincts.

For the unfiltered words and philosophy of Yogi Berra, take a look at When You Come to a Fork in the Road, Take It! : Inspiration and Wisdom from One of Baseball's Greatest Heroes by Yogi Berra and Dave Kaplan.  It is quick read and mixes baseball, business and Yogi-isms in a great little package.

A smart leader and a mentor.  So......tell me, what was his real name?  You don't see many esteemed leaders out there named Yogi lol.

Lawrence Peter Berra - got the nickname from a movie he saw as a teen because he crossed his legs like a "yogi"...  An umpire later asked him to sign some balls.  He started signing them Larry Berra and the umpire got mad.  So, the rest is history - Yogi it was.   He is a former St. Louisian and the book is an easy to read one with a business slant.

Absolutely. This is my mantra. Do the research. Get all the facts, then make an informed decision. It worked for me as an executive and it works for me in real estate.

Ryan,

Good luck with the series on Yogi-isms. You're off to a wonderful start. There are some great ones, including my favorite, "It ain't over til it's over." :)

Vickie - Research is the key.  However, I see people paralyzed with fear of making a mistake.  So they plan and plan and plan and never take any action.  Sometimes you simply have to "Just Do It."

Steve - Like Yogi, I have no idea where I am going with this series.  I liked the book - an easy read and always like some good baseball stories.

Lee & Pamela - It should be interesting (and maybe insightful)... My favorite Yogism so far is "We made too many wrong mistakes."

This is going to be a really good series, just to be able to take a look at some of the things that Yogi would say.  HMMMMMM

Hi Ryan ~ Ok - I usually can make decisions easily but lately I've been stymied over picking a new phone - I'm going to take a page from Yogi's playbook.

Liz - It is a nice little book.  It shows how important common sense and core values play an integral role in one's business and personal life.

Don - It is pretty amazing that the St Louis Cardinals lost out to the Yankees over $250.  Yogi Berra has had an interesting life and it was a refreshing read given the ego in professional sports today.

Elizabeth - Go with your instincts... I recently purchased a Blackberry Storm.  Personally, I love it - especially because it takes pretty darn good pictures.

Hi again, thanks for enlightening me with his full name.  And I like your comment above about people who plan and plan and never take action.  That is so common in real estate.  You should do a post about that.

Ryan, sometimes we make it harder than it needs to be don't we?

On another note, my husband and I love visiting The Hill.  It brings back memories of when we lived in Sicily.  Also, we stayed at the Park Avenue Mansion last year.  By far, my favorite place was Park Avenue Coffee.  I mean c'mon . . .over 64 flavors of gooey butter cake!  We definitely plan on going back!

Stacie - It is a lot of fun to be a tourist in your own town. I am taking a weekend off and staying in Grafton or Elsah. Time to recharge the batteries. Dale at Park Avenue Coffee does a great job. He keeps expanding his distribution network for the gooey butter cakes. He is now supplying other coffee shops and is a hit at Straubs. Gary - Yogi made some gaffes, but there is some great wisdom there.

Ryan, I don't know how I missed these blogs earlier!  I love it, anytime Yogi Berra can be worked into a blog about real estate, I am going to read it.  I love Yogi, his sayings may sound funny, but there is a lot of truth in each of them!  Thanks for taking the time to do these!  I like the first one!
