Going the Extra Mile for my Buyers in Eureka, CA

Well, it is after 10pm and I've just got back home after showing a few houses to my new buyers who are looking to purchase their first home in Eureka, CA. The husband had his day off today and I was in Crescent City, CA most of the day showing houses there. Crescent City is about an hour and a half from Eureka, so I could not get to Eureka in time before dark to meet my Eureka buyers in the day light hours.

Luckily, the couple was still interested in viewing a few new listings that fit their home search criteria. I went to extra mile by showing them the homes this late, but I knew that the husband had to work tomorrow and could not have made it. How about you? Would you still show your clients houses after 9pm?

I believe that in our MLS, the keylock will cease to work after 9 pm. I think I could get in the house before 9 pm, and show after that time, but probably not get into the home after that.

I do believe there are some safety issues here, especially for women agents who would be showing single men.

I do know about going the extra mile for buyers though. I put over 800 miles on my car in less than a week for out-of-state buyers. We successfully found them a house but boy, was it an intense process for us both. We put in some 10 and 12 hour days searching for property in four counties.

I think with the current market most agents have to go that "extra mile" in order to properly service clients and potential clients! That is if they want to make a living!

But as Nannette stated; there are safety issues and I don't think that is something that is discussed enough here on AR! Even with the policy of meeting first at the office; it does not guarantee that the person you met is the person who they truly are!

The economy is affecting all people, and people get desperate when they have lost their jobs, have bills to pay, and hungry children at home! There have been news reports of men of grandfather age robbing banks!

Yes we must get out into the community and seek out that potential client; but our personal safety must come before *The Deal*!

I agree we should be going the extra mile and do what needs to be done to meet the needs of the clients. This shows your professionalism and commitment to them. If the lock boxes don't work after 9p that might be a problem, but other arrangements I sure can be made to gain access to the house. Nannette and Eilean mentioned about safety, I am not saying not to be careful, but regardless of day or night something could happen. This is where a peron needs to make others aware of where they are and will agree to call to check when they leave.

Being accomodating is important, especially to third shift employees.

Our key boxes work from 8 am to 9 pm so late evenings are out. I think all of us responding to your post have no problem going the extra mile for a customer. The safety problem is an issue that can't be over looked, especially when showing homes with no electricity (which as we all know is very common in this market). On evening showings my husband will go with me; if he can't go I keep my cell phone in one hand - its just an ounce of precaution. Did your customer buy a house?

Thank you to everyone that has commented so far. I think that all of us agents should be aware of our safety when showing clients around, even those clients whom we have known for a while. Last night when I showed my buyers the house, I did bring a family member along with me just to be safe and to help lock up the house.

I would not have shown the house so late had there been a number of factors that would prompt me to do so. One factor was that yesterday was the only day the husband had off from his restaurant business (which he works in from morning to night daily), the house I showed was exceptionally low priced and fit most of their criteria, I have known these clients for a few years now, the area was not far from my home, and I brought a family member along.

Yes, I agree that as professional real estate agents, we need to be professional and accomedating to our clients, be mindful of our work time and balance that with family and fun time, and also be safe at the same time. That is what makes our job so unique and enjoyable. Have fun selling and be safe out there!
