After looking at the US Census website:

see http://www.census.gov

I have found data that can be used for my buyers

At least a place for them to find information.

They have categories on:

People and Households (including Housing)

Business and Industry

Geography

Newsroom (press releases) and Special Topics.

If you have never browsed this site, put it on your list, there is a lot to learn!

ABSOLUTELY!

I love this site and tour it regularly.  Census offers much more timely data than it once did.

Charles, we've been watching the data here also.  In the past, it's been fairly out of date, but has been improving a bit lately.  Thanks for the post.

Thanks!  Good information.  When I clicked on the site, I thought I was on a real estate agent's site.  The director's photo made me think this  . . . ha ha ha

Charles, I use the US Census site for demographics all the time. Great info. Thanks.

9:16am • #16

thank you Charles for pointing out this very useful website. Im currently a realtor but also working with the US Census here in Massachusetts. It is a huge undertaking and an ongoing process til April 2010. The Federal Census represents $300 Billion Federal dollars for 2010 and Trillions that will be allocated for the next 10 years. Its statistics will be used to decide who gets federal dollars for highways, schools, hospitals etc. It is vitally important that we get accurate data and a high return rate of census forms to determine where and how this federal monies are spent! Any questions please let me know and I will try to respond to all queries!

I have to say after reading some of the realtors above comments that this year was the first year in the history of the Census that enumeration was done electronically using hand held computers HHC's. I personally peformed some of the enumeration here locally and my experience as a Realtor came in very handy as well as being able to handle the handheld computer (like a PDA). We are hoping that our returns this year will improve dramatically!

We use census data when making Squidoo lenses when building out a realtor's presence or a listing per zip code.  You're right, it has great data that really tells a story effectively.

The census is great, when it is up to date.  But, things in life, even neighborhoods can change pretty fast (for a snail that is).  One question, how much were you using your blackberry nine years ago?  Wwith any luck, maybe Al Gore can convince our govt to use his Internet to provide more real time census data.

The census report is one of the best tools in an advertising agency's best tool crib. I used to refer to them religously when I was in the boat manufacturing business in the 60' and 70's. The demographic data in them is pretty reliable.

Hi Charles. I find it to be somewhat valuable when it comes to local demographics. I've noticed it has improved a bit since 2000.

US Census is a good source for information on demographics and community trends.

9:06pm • #35

Great info but do we really know how accurate this info is?  This is the same government spending our tax dollars to bail everyone else out.  I'm all for knowledge and information but can we really trust the government?

I guess sometimes you have to go with what you got or the lesser of all evils, or both......

Charles - I do appreciate your post.  I was a census "lister" this past Spring to help prepare for the 2010 census.  I know some are skeptical about the whole process.  I will tell you that we all had a background check and had record our mileage and time - a good thing since our work was paid by taxpayers.  All information was entered onto Hand Held Computers and each property was "Geo Tagged"  We also had very strict rules as to how to report properties and there was a Quality Control Team that went after the "Listers".

You are correct that there is a wealth of information on the site.

I always direct relocating buyers (some who have no idea of where to move to in our huge MLS area) to the Census site, especially the American Factfinder pages.

I've been on this site before and it can be quite overwhelming for consumers. Heck I had to ask someone in our local government to help ME with housing stats just recently for our largest county of Cook.
