I have been reading up on Karen George's SEO suggestions (even though she is a loan person focusing on Arizona Loans) on increasing the number of links to my website, and specifically doing it with keyword linking (also known as anchor text).

You might have heard about link swaps, but apparently (according to Karen and others) they don't help you with search engines since Google sees two buddy sites as not being "important," so instead it likes to see INCOMING links.

And I hate going around and begging for links, so I thought I'd figure out a way to make it a charity driven event. So if you link to me, you help a charity of my choice. My main charity is the St. Bernard PR0JECT to help Katrina Relief

Here are the simple rules

  1. Link to me with the proper formatting, with one of 3 formats (to change it up)
  2. Email me that the link was made
  3. We wait until Google indexes it
  4. I tally up all the links after 30 days and I give the money to the charity above

Please let me know if this is a horrible idea or sick in your mind. I hope not.

Since I want to spread out the types of link, pick one of the three codes from inside the box below.

HTML Code for Link Option #1

  • <a href="http://www.franklyrealty.com">Virginia Real Estate</a>

Looks like this: Virginia Real Estate

HTML Code for Link Option #2

  • <a href="http://www.franklyrealty.com">Arlington Condos Virginia </a>

Looks like this: Arlington Condos Virginia

HTML Code for Link Option #3

  • <a href="http://www.franklyrealty.com">Northern Virginia Homes for Sale</a>

Looks like this: Northern Virginia Homes For Sale

You can either incorporate it into a blog, Link from your Active Rain main page, you can write about this project, or link from your blogroll or main page.

So here is the donation breakdown (revised by Karen):

  • $10 for even a little shout out in one of your blogs. It doesn't even need to be about this project and can be randomly at the end of middle of your blog. As long as Google grabs it!
  • $15 for a blogroll link, or a link from your main Active Rain page.
  • $20 for a link from your regular non-activerain website.
  • $40 for a front page link from your website with a page rank of 3 or more! (this might be too much to ask, but I'll give more for it)

So somebody is going to ask how long do they have to keep it up there. Well I hope you like the blog and will want to keep it up but if not, no biggy. How about 3 months? And if it stays up a year, I'll make ANOTHER donation in the same amount above.

Thanks, and let me know when you have put up a link somewhere!

Great Idea.   So when we link to your blog do we just email you?

Yep, link to it using one of the 3 link options above and then send me an email. I'll resubmit that page to Google and we wait for it to be indexed!

Also make sure to rate this post with a 5 so it might be FEATURED on the front page!

Hey Frank, it's 9:56am and my minute hand is between 9 and 12.  Does that mean that I don't get a link?  :-D

Great idea Frank, but I didn't understand your instructions on picking the link options.  I need my webmaster to do this for me so does that mean she has to look at her watch and pick a link?  Sorry, I'm so low tech its scary.

Frank-- this is a brilliant idea and I might have to steal it.

However:  Google really considers link maturity.  So I would start the drive now and then donate the money at the end of the year.  If they keep the link up two years, donate again at the end of two years.

But what you want is MATURE LINKS.

Also, you should have everyone link to your site from their main sites.  20 links from AR are going to help you, but not as much as 20 links from 20 different places.

Hope this helps.  Good idea!  Can I steal it?

Hey Karen!

An honor to hear from you.

You can copy/steal with credit it (if multiple people link to you AND me, doesn't that make google think they aren't as unique?) and let other people steal it, as long as you don't mind benefiting the same charity! Deal? I have info on them at www.FranklyRealty.com . I went down to New Orleans to help them put elderly people back into their  flooded homes. Hundreds are still living in trailers.

As for Mature links on non ActiveRain domains, Yes that is ideal. But even your project showed that just a few new links will make a huge difference too. Maybe I'll change it to $10 from an ActiveRain main page, $15 from a website, and $20 from a website front page with a 2+ PageRank.

Why don't you have a better domain? Even a long one. Your super short domain with no Arizona or Loans, won't that hurt you?

Ok, I tweaked it some. How does it look now?

Terry,

Don't worry, it would cost you more to ask your programmer to make the change. You can make the link straight from your Active Rain main About us page. (http://activerain.com/stagedtosell)

Or you can write a blog on it. Or even sneak it into the end of your next blog. Here are the steps...

1) Write out "Virginia Real Estate" somewhere in your new blog (or profile page)

2) Highlight those words

3) Look for the chain link icon on next to the B (bold) I and U

4) Enter in my domain name http://www.franklyrealty.com

Let me know when you have done it!

And tell other people (don't spam them)

Frank

Hey Frank, I think I just read somewhere that Katrina Relief is on Google's list of "Poison Words" for websites.  I'm not exactly sure what this really means but I thought I'd let you know.

I love this!  I am going to start a similar one myself!  Thank you for the suggestion of how to marry getting more traffic with giving.
