Hi Kathleen,  Beautiful !  One of my moms favorites.  She explained how the amount of acidity in the soil affected the deepness of the blue color !

I have never seen lacecap hydrangas before - gorgeous!  My father in law in Belfast Northern Ireland, buries rusty old nails in his soil to get the rich deep blue colour.

6 Samoset Ave, Oak bluffs, MA

This old-fashion flowering shrub, called the "Lace Cap Hydrangea" was taken at the Victorian home that my family and I stayed at summer after summer at 6 Samoset Avenue, Oak Bluffs, Ma

It was a rooming house owned by Dot Sullivan. We would vacation each August for 2 weeks and the room at the top with the porch was ours to rent. Wonderful memories are cherished from those vacations.

BTW, a similar house is on the market now further down the street  in the $800's

Thanks for sharing these olde timers! They are beautiful. I have several (although not lace caps) throughout my gardens. They make nice cut arrangements too.

BILL: Back in April I did a blog about hydrangeas that were in my cousin DJ's property and about the acidity of the soil and aluminum. There are so many species and a variety of lovely colors. I am partial to the blues.

Hydrangeas are my very favorite.......sentimental ro me because my grandmother had tons of them.  She didn't have these lacecaps, but she would have loved them too.

SUSAN: The rust from the nails must create the acidic soil for the hydrangeas to bloom in blue. It is all about the composition of the soil.

LIZ: I am glad you found this blog that was written this past July when I went on a day trip to Oak Bluffs to celebrate my Aunt Hilda's 91st birthday. Our  family always loved vacationing there. These Lacecap hydrangeas are gorgeous. I had not seen this variety before I did some research to get the match from the photos I took that day.
