What do you want to be when you grow up?

By
Real Estate Sales Representative with RE/MAX Preferred RS152252A

It seems to me that there are many women about my age who are searching for happiness.  I suppose there are probably many men my age looking for the same thing, but it seems that women may be a bit more vocal about it.  They are leaving relationships and jobs in the ever elusive search for happiness and fulfillment.  They are interviewing career counsels for advice on what they should do when they grow up.  They are seeing psychologists in the hopes that if they dig deep, they will find the cause of their unhappiness.  Is it really the men they live with?  Is it really the job that is getting them down?  This morning while at the gym I got to talking to two women and of course, the subject of what do we want to be when we grow up, came up.   I said I only hoped that I would grow up before I died.

Seems to me that this may be what the problem is.  Maybe we need to grow up and face reality.  I am listening to a CD by Abraham Hicks.  She suggests that we are where we are, and it's okay.  It has to be okay, because that is where we are, and it has got to be enough, because that's all there is.  And furthermore, that's okay.

So, is it?  Is it enough?  I hope so, because right now, it's all there is.

Oh, the eternal question...It's is, of course, ok, and it is uniquely ours, my Susan.  What else is there?  Personally, I never wanted to grow up in that sense, and still don't.  Drifting with the changes of seasons, the tides and the moonrises, we find our own wherever it is.  In the uneven textures in between the worry lines and those, imprinted on our faces by laughter...  In the way only those who truly love us look at us, hold us, carry us through the untended gardens of our lives - that's there for all of us.  Everything else 'these women' are hoping to find on a couch of a shrink or in a career change is always going to be so much less and oh so temporary:-)

Hugs, my dear Susan!

Inna, you put it so beautifully.  Drifting with the changes of the seasons, the tides and the moonrises... truly poetic.  We are where we are, right here, in this time, and it's okay.  Love to you pretty lady!

Susan,

So many people search only to find out that what they have is infinitely better. Often times its too late than.

I am happy to report that I Know what I want to be when I grow up.  Exactly who I am now.  I'm happy, successful, love my hubby, adore my kids, have volunteered a ton, have good values, and always do the right thing.  I wanted to play the guitar before I die, so I took lessons last year.  I still want to speak Spanish fluently, but that will have to come.  Otherwise, I'm good.

Susan, most people only too late discover that, "Wherever I go---there I am."  Those who forget the thrill of the journey are bound to find arriving at the destination disappointing.

Rich, I could search for a sweeter compliment, but I wouldn't find it.  Gracia!  xxoo

Sally, you have achieved what most people search their entire lives for!

Chalres, you are right.  Wherever we go, there we are.  The CD I am listening to says that we were not born to get things done.  We were born to dream of things and to work toward them.  In the working towards them, we dream new things, every day.  Constantly evolving.  The goal isn't to complete them, although some, we will complete.

Susan, you resonated with me today. I don't think I have EVER grown up or even could figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I want to be multiple things. Never one. Never "completely" satisfied. I don't want to "arrive." You are hitting the mid life crisis big time that we all do that begs the question, "is this all there is?" Usually at around 50 there is a sense of wanting a shift from success to significance. Happiness is VERY HARD to define. You know it when you feel it. But in self-discovery and self-examination of getting comfortable in your own skin it has to do with truly understanding what you "value." Figure that out, then do more things in those areas and you will be well on your way to a happy, fulfilled life. Happiness cannot come from another person. I think unhappiness can though. Happiness for you and all of us as they say is an inside job. Keep working on what is important to you on the inside, and more of your answers will come to you. I do like the phrase of wisdom you came up with though that you'd like to grow up before you die. How about just a variation of that, be truly happy before you die in whatever makes you happy. I agree with what Charles said too, part of it is the journey, not just the destination. BTW, the destination can be boring cause then you set off on a new destination. I'm with you on the journey. I'm not going anywhere.

Hi Susan, Deep thoughts today.... I think if people are truly unhappy with what they are doing, and without blaming those around them see that they need to change, then they will remain unhappy until they seek those changes.   I don't know, if this is all there is, Susan :-)

Gary, I don't want to grow up if it means that life is so serious.  I love to be silly.  Happiness is very hard to define in the big picture, but somewhat easy if you take it moment by moment. You are right, in comes from inside and we have to work from the inside out and make it a journey.

Hi Mary, I think that change is good too.  I just think that we need to examine our reasons for change.  We were born to change, and to keep growing.

Susan, I thought maybe I could "grow up" someday.  I thought that I would be like my parents and grandparents.  However, I find myself still sitting cross-legged at the computer.  (We used to say Indian-style, but that has fallen out of favor for some reason.  And it stil seems right to me. No disrepect, just objective.)  I still with the dogs, I can't imagine either my mother, grandmother or any forebear running at my age, unless it was from something or to something in an emergency.  I still keep up on the rock scene and love technology.  I wonder what they would think of that.  I'm Peter Pan.  I won't grow up, Wendy.  And that is okay with me.  Yes, I'm still searching for happiness, but I have found some contentment.  And, that is good enough for me.

Suzanne, I thought I'd be like my mom and it turns out I am!  But I always wanted to be a veterinarian and here I am, selling houses.  But that's okay.  Because that' where I am.  Right?  lol!!  I think the search for happiness is quite human and probably what we are here for.  xxoo

Richard, thanks for the feature in Square Pegs.  If ever there was a couple of square pegs, I'd say it was us... !  xxoo  Have a wonderful night my friend.  I am so happy you are quite satisfied.  You deserve every happiness.

DEEP Susie, DEEEEEP!!  First off, I dont think any of us should EVER grow up completely, we need to have fun and that requires our inner child.  Happiness is not having what you want, it is wanting what you have. The question really is are we happy being on the merri-go-round, or are we brave enough to jump off the merri-go round and hop on the roller coaster?

Caren, retiring has never been part of my wish list.  I have too much fun with the people at work!

Robby, you are profound.  Happiness is wanting what you have.  And you say I'm deep!  That's awesome.  As to the last part of your comment, sometimes I am very happy to sit on the merry-go-round and just watch everyone else have fun.    Sometimes, I jump down and ride the roller coaster.  Thanks for the great comment!

The first thing I ever wanted to be was a band director, like the one I adored in junior high school, Mr. Schultz. I often wonder if I'd been happier if I'd actually followed that dream!

Cheers,

Robin
