I didn't know our old Rialto Theater in Searcy Arkansas had a basement!

Rialto theater on leftOn the left in this picture the old Rialto Theater in Searcy Arkansas is shown.  It has had major changes since opened in 1923 as the Grand Theater.  In 1929 it had the name changed to Rialto.

In 1949  it was remodeled to include the addition of a 67 foot high neon marquis.

Searcy Arkansas and White County have enjoyed the Rialto for about 86 years.

There is a movement right now by some residents of Rose Bud High School led by Liz Clark and Julie Chism to take it on as a project and assist in trying to raise funds to make needed repairs to the old building.

An article by Warren Watkins, Daily Citizen writer, reports that the Rialto TheaterRialto, once owned by the Lightle family, was given to the city by the Lightle Family in the 1980's.  In 1994 it was leased to Victor Weber for $175 a month.  Weber shows only family-oriented movies at $2 per ticket and charges a lot less for concession items.  When his lease expired the city let him continue with a verbal agreement where Mr. Weber pays no rent.

Most needed repairs are to the entire electrical system and the roof needs replacing.  The balcony is completely unusable.

What totally shocked me was the article's statement that the basement floods in the winter and the water stands until it evaporates in the summer.  I DIDN'T KNOW THE RIALTO HAD A BASEMENT.....  The Rialto was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

I remember when they had the grand reopening in 1949, after the remodel.  The balcony was usually for the colored and downstairs for the white.  However, when we went to the grand reopening there were so many people that we sat in the  balcony.  I don't think they even let the colored in that night.  Isn't that crazy, it is hard to believe it was only 60 years ago and we felt so strongly about associations between the races?

Suesan, all old buildings cost a lot to restore.  That is why I say I love looking at them and visiting them but don't want to own one!

Ryan, I would like to save the Rialto.  I hope we can do it! Thanks for comment.

Don, those are wonderful observations about the old theater.  So it was torn down and rebuilt from scratch in 1923?  You slept through Hamlet?  Funny because I would have also.  I never understood or appreciated Shakespeare.  BUT!   Was there a basement???  You didn't mention that.

Harold Gene, it is terrible that there were separations between the races.  I think the world is better now than it was then.  I sat in the balcony one time because the theater was so crowded.  I've forgotten the movie.   We took the kids with us.  It may have been the movie "Patton."   Was there a basement????

Barbara, that must be one musty basement a few months out of the year. Here is what I love the most though: A verbal agreement to extend the lease even though no rent is paid. Kate

I have no memory of there being a basement.  Maybe someone who worked there will remember it?  It would be unusual to have one in Searcy.

I have no recollection of a basement at the Rialto, either, but do remember the balcony.    It was at the Railto Theater, probably 7th grade, that my then boyfriend, now husband, first held my hand.

Kate, we live in a very fair town.  How can you say the city charges too much rent if they charge none!

Harold Gene, do you think someone has it all wrong and there is no basement after all?  My daughter worked there as a teen ager and said she had to go to the back behind the screen to gather concession goods but she was never aware of a basement.

Anita, I've got goosebumps just thinking of the thrill of 7th grade hand-holding!  You two were truly life-long sweethearts!  What was the name of the movie at the hand holding!!

Mrs Barbara,

I am so glad that Mrs Kate did not come in and bash me yet in this blog. I have oh so much to offer, and she has an ongoing commentary that goes over my head.

Ms Barbara, This is social networking. Not stalking. Now I'm wondering if Nutsy has gotten into your head. Have you only been pretending to co-found SWSS with me?

Seems we have agreed that there is no basement, until someone proves us wrong.

Mrs Barbara,

I think Mrs Kate might be like that woman Glen Close played in Fatal Attraction. I think she has an unusual interest in my body.

Mrs. Barbara,

I am extremely interested in the Rialto, because my grandfather Allen Cooke, worked and performed there for many years.  I have photos of my grandfather and KK King acting out a Western, in full costumes, portraying Jesse James.  He was the projectionist and showed the first "talkie" at the Rialto.  I spent many a night in the balcony with my grandfather.  I never knew there was a basement either?

Tim, thanks for the comment. Why don't you scan a picture of your grandfather and post it on the blog or I could do a whole new one.  It would be fun.  The theater is still going strong and the consensus seems to be that there was no basement.

I am K.K.'s daughter, Jacqueline (Jackie) now living in Denton, TX. I was thrilled to be sent a story about there being interest in reviving the Rialto. My dad moved to Searcy in 1938 to take over a manager/part owner after the Rialto and another movie theatre inBatesville were bought by a company out of Kansas City.
And, yes, there is a basement; small and was used mostly for storage. There use to be stage acts, so there were a few props, but mostly supplies stored there. I well remember when Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers, Tom Mix, and other "cowboys" would come into town and do a stage show between the main features.
I would appreciate it if someone could keep me updated on whatever plans for fundraising may be in the works.

Jacqueline, there is a fund raiser going on right now to restore the theater.  It is headed by Amy Burton who is in charge of Main Street Searcy.  I think it would have been fascinating to see Tex Ritter and Roy Rogers.  I was in a little town in Georgia watching their shows on Saturday afternoon but they surely never visited that town.  Your dad is sort of a hero here in Searcy for still running the theater.  Thanks for the comment.

Hank House, thanks for the comment.  They are restoring it and trying to make the restoration authentic.
