If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and comment.I knew my marketing guru would be devious again for my birthday because that's just his way. He had planned a great weekend of local travel and touring on the San Diego Trolley; the Coaster train to Oceanside; sailing on the Stars & Stripes, the International America's Cup Class yacht that won two America's Cups and lost one; supper with my mom and her boyfriend at the Oceanside Harbor at Joe's Crab Shack; and finally an afternoon at the Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

I've always liked the Birch Aquarium until my marketing guru and I started traveling and visiting Aquariums in other states. We also like to visit Zoos, college campuses, arboretums and botanical gardens, and almost anything with the word "national" in it -- national forest, national park, national monument.

I find it interesting that San Diego is so much defined by its water and wildlife -- world-class beaches, Zoo and Wild Animal Park -- but we don't have a world-class aquarium, although Birch is nice and in a great location overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Nonetheless, here are my Top 10 aquariums:

  1. JellyfishMonterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey CA
  2. Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach CA
  3. New England Aquarium, Boston MA
  4. Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
  5. Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, New Orleans LA
  6. Newport Aquarium, Newport KY
  7. The Florida Aquarium, Tampa FL
  8. Texas State Aquarium, Corpus Christi TX
  9. Underwater Adventures Aquarium, Mall of America, Minneapolis-St. Paul MN
  10. Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas NV

I'm pretty sure that when I finally do get to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago that it will be in my Top 10.

Jim:  Obviously, with this post, you are either fishing for comments, or fishing for points.  I bet you get both.  By the way... I am told that the aquarium in Baltimore is pretty cool.  Any opinion on that one ?

Yeah -- Tampa made your list!  (I like Baltimore, too)  And Tampa has the optional boat trips/dolphin watching in conjunction with visiting the aquarium... how could you not?

Anyway, it sounds like you had a wonderful birthday!

Hey, Sharon - We were supposed to go to the Georgia Aquarium back in 1998 when we were there. I forget why we didn't make it. Aquariums are kind of like real estate brokerages: Everyone's #1, the biggest, whatever, so you have to read the fine print. Georgia likes to say that it has the most gallons of water, but Monterey says, "Hey, we have the Pacific Ocean" and a lot of aquarium water too, though. Shedd in Chicago also likes to claim #1. Then you'll also see that one has the most aquariums, one has the largest aquarium, one as the most species of sharks, one has the most species period, one has this, one has that. Of course, that's why it's important to visit all of them. When we first went to the Mall of America, we skipped the aquarium thinking that it couldn't possibly rival the other great aquariums we had be to. After all, it was in a mall! I think Georgia, Shedd, and the National Aquarium in Baltimore will all make my Top 10, which might have to be increased to a Top 20 by that time.

Hey, Karen Anne - I haven't been to D.C. or Baltimore and that whole little area right there, so I haven't been to National Aquarium in Baltimore.

Hey, Shoshana - We actually visited the Florida Aquarium in Tampa during the first week that it was open. They still had some unfinished areas, but it was great then and I can only imagine what it has turned out to be.

You guys have to plan a trip to Baltimore and see that aquarium. It ranks right up there with several on your list that I have also been to. Have Russel work on that for next years birthday!!! As you probably already guessed, there are a lot of "Nationals" around that area. Heck even the DC baseball team is the Nationals!

Hi, Jim:

Well, I've been to four of the aquariums on your list and I agree with Monterey Bay being number 1. I would add the aquarium in Honolulu--small, yet elegant. It's a great place to go in and cool off when the Kona winds are blowing, too.

By the way, Happy Birthday, Jim! I'm sorry I missed the day and hope it was wonderful!

Cheers,

Robin

Jim, Great Blog, The only one I have been to on your list other than Birch is the Monterey Bay.  I like Birch for the Children's tours.  They let the children go over by the tide pool and they only take small groups at a time so EVERYONE of the little ones can see.
