The Real Reason I Seldom Take a Day Off

By

When I toured the RE/MAX International offices back in 2005 I was surprised to hear that Gail Liniger insisted on a "clean desk" policy for the entire company. It was explained that she felt if you came to your desk the next morning with piles everywhere, you'd be bogged down and not have a fresh start.

Ok, that makes since.  But I've never adopted a clean desk policy at my office because I'd fail miserably. I'm a piler and usually have a few going off to my left. But this is what I came back to one day a few weeks ago when I needed to be out of the office for the entire day.

You'll notice the papers in the chair in the foreground of the photo. They were running out of room on my desk and wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I like the concept of clearing my desk each evening, but I don't think I'll ever get there.

While a clean desk is a great goal, my organized piles that greet me when I come in remind me of exactly what my priorities for the day should be.  No one else tells me what my priorities are - I decide them for myself.

I would love a clean desk, myself, but I think I'm like you -- those piles!

Okay now, I need to stop and clean my desk. I do that, then it gets filled up with papers again.

I totally understand that need. She is right in that sense. I would love to have a clean desk to start my day. That way, I feel like I can think. When it's messy, I often feel not at peace.

Off to cleaning my desk now. Thanks for the nudge.

One time I was talking with Dave Liniger at a conference and he said he was gone so much that he would come back from a trip and throw a lot of stuff away. If it was important they would write back. It's probably a good thing Gail adopted this policy. As for myself? Well, I would like to think that creative minds are seldom tidy.

Well, ok, it might not e a clean desk, but the piles are neat and in nice rows. That counts for something, right?  :)

My desk looks just like yours all the time. A clean desk for me would signify that business is slow so I am ok with my organized clutter. :-)

I understand the policy of a clean desk reducing the mind 'clutter'. I like the piles, hopefully in category order, spread around neatly.  Did you ever notice the people that are total 'flighty dingbats', their offices always look like an explosion took place?  There ya have it.  Gail is right.

My desk is a mess.  It has always been a mess.  It always will be a mess.  BUT, I do know where everything is within the mess

Colleen, I am a piler as well not a filer. I think we just have our natural styles of organization. I find everything just fine in my piles.
