This is not that unusual of a sight in our area when driving some of the more rural roads, these very old houses seemingly abandoned but kept in a preserved kind of way.  I'm glad whoever owns them hasn't torn them down.  It makes it nice to have these odd little glimpses into days gone by and reminds us to cherish the history that surrounds us.     This photo was taken out in the Conley's Creek area of Whittier, NC, not far from the Smoky Mountain Country Club.      The picture was okay in color but once I cast the sepia tone on it then it looked like it did in my mind's eye before I pushed the shutter.

Late on Friday afternoon was a good time to go out and collect signs from some sold listings and some that we didn't renew.  On my way out to collect the sign from the sold lot out at Conley Mountain Association, the moment I turned onto Sam Dills Road there were a number of rural scene photo opportunities.  I'm sure Leslie must have wondered what was taking me so long.  This area in Swain County, although technically has a Bryson City mailing address is actually known by local people as Conley Creek.    There were huge fields of harvested hay and because we've had both an extended period of warmish weather plus the recent rains, the fields had a nice green look to them.     When I see old buildings like this barn, it's very easy to imagine what this area was like 100 years ago.  I li...

Some creatures aren’t meant to be domesticated and ought to be allowed to roam freely about their native habitats. Very few Tree Dudes have ever been tagged with numbers and this display of captivity feels to me almost like harboring exotic animals. It was evident that this Tree Dude felt a little chagrined with his ID number branded on his brow and his feet entwined in flowers for all to see. (I've obscured the number to prevent further humiliation).   This Tree Dude will likely long outlive the flowers and the life of the wooden plaque.  But with his very long memory, he'll never forget his time in captivity.

How do I luck out? I spent another enjoyable day with two clients who came to us as a result of a referral from some buyers we worked with a few years ago. You guessed it, I had the backseat to myself and turned it into a roving office. Part of what these buyers are trying to do is get familiar with the different areas of Western North Carolina. I learned a long time ago that it is impossible for buyers to really get to know an area if I’m doing the driving. One of the places we looked at houses was in the Nantahala Gorge in Bryson City, home of the Nantahala River…a very popular white water river for rafting and kayaking. On our way out of the gorge, the buyers spotted a little hamburger restaurant called The Burger Basket. What a nice surprise. I don’t eat burgers very often but this...

When most people think of the Great Smoky Mountains, they really aren’t thinking much about golf courses. Just over the shoulder of this Druid lies the Smoky Mountain Country Club and Golf Course in the Conley’s Creek community of Whittier, NC. SMCC features fine dining in the form of the Persimmon Grille, the golf course surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and amenities such as the work out gym, tennis courts and swimming pool. The beauty of this location, whether you are a golfer or not, is the proximity to the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cherokee and Harrah’s Casino, Sylva and Bryson City. This area is wonderful for year-round living or a vacation get away. The feeling of living among nature and the woods is not compromised by the closeness of the outd...

Looking for a fun way to celebrate Christmas with the family?  Take a ride on the Polar Express near Hendersonville.  The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is taking visitors on a magical journey to the North Pole aboard their special Polar Express from now through Christmas Eve.  There's nothing like it! Once you board the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad's Polar Express (which departs from Bryson City Depot), you and your children will be treated to the retelling of the Christmas classic as you are whisked away to the North Pole.  Between sips of hot cocoa, listen to carols being sung by the staff.  Once you reach the North Pole, Santa Claus will join you, bringing each little girl and boy a special gift...their very own sleigh bell.  But, will they be able to hear it ring?  You'll have to...

How about this for a view?  Located not far from Bryson City, Fontana Lake is the largest lake in Western North Carolina.  The lake covers two counties...Swain and Graham.  It is also the only access point for some remote areas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Fontana Lake is very popular with boaters of all kinds plus considered some of the finest waters for small mouth bass fishing.   Selling real estate in the mountains of Western North Carolina can be a real pleasure.  This shot was taken while showing a house in Fontana Lakes Estates.  Combining lake, forests and mountains - it just doesn't get much better!

Although summer draws the most visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, followed closely by hoards of October leaf-lookers, spring is a time of special beauty in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Since there are only a brief few weeks that are warm enough to allow the emergence of early blooming plants before the leaf canopy darkens the forest floor, the wildflowers appear en masse from mid-March through April. Although the Park is known for magnificent vistas and enormous peaks, it’s always fun to enjoy the beauty “up close and personal!” And it’s fun to locate as many different kinds of blooms as possible. My favorite wildflower viewing areas are Deep Creek near Bryson City, the Smokemont area north of the Oconaluftee Visitor’s Center, and the Cove Hardwoods Nature Trai...

www.RickStrohm.com Rick & Rick Strohm, Jr. State of the Economy After home prices have dropped for the past three years, they appear to be stabilizing. The National 'median' home price today is roughly $169,000, which is down almost 14% from a year ago and an estimated 30% from its peak. It is safe to say that we have reached the point where prices are justified by the fundamentals of the economy and may even represent an undervaluation. Foreclosures and short sales comprise about 50% of transactions today, creating market distortions in otherwise stable neighborhoods. In determining valuations, we are capturing only transaction prices, and prices of those properties might be 20% below values of other homes. For that reason, it's possible that widely cited projections that a third or mo...

Near Bryson City North Carolina lies one of the most interesting and least known areas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Although frequented by locals, the Deep Creek area of the park offers more recreational opportunities than any other place in the park. Deep Creek is popular in the summer with swimmers and for tubing. Trout fishing is popular here as well, with a valid North Carolina Fishing license. You may also ride bicycles on the Lower Deep Creek Trail, one of the few trails in the park where they are permitted. There is a fully improved campground and a ranger station as well. Deep Creek also features three significant waterfalls within a short walking distance of each other. One of the most popular is Indian Creek Falls. To get to the falls, simply follow the Lower De...

At a recent gathering of the nation's most successful real estate broker-owners, the message delivered by the experts was clear: Get ready for 2009. Each year, REAL Trends Inc., a leading provider of strategy and trends information in the residential realty services business, sponsors a two-day conference attended by the 500 most successful broker-owners in the United States. Among the dignitaries present at this year's conference, held May 8-9 in Denver, was Bruce Zipf, president and CEO of NRT & Mark Willis, CEO of Keller Williams International...just to name a few. The common them, shared by almost every presenter, can be summarized thusly: The current downturn in the real estate market will end during 2009, but that is only good news for "you" if you are prepared. Many consumers ha...
