Green homes: fashion or trend?

It seems like energy efficient homes may be more of a lasting fashion than passing trend. An article on casaGURU via www.newscanada.com claims that newhomebuyers are more likely to go for energy efficient green homes than any other. Why? Because not only is it the more environmentally concious choice, but it saves money in the long run like on heating bills, for instance.

Below is an excerpt from that article:

There are selling points and then there are selling points. Energy efficiency continues to be one of the most sought after features among home buyers in Canada today; in fact a recent survey of homebuyers in Ottawa and Toronto showed that 94 per cent of respondents agreed that energy efficiency reduces operating costs even if they are perceived to cost more upfront.

Why? Because, according to industry experts, energy-efficient homes are less expensive to operate, more comfortable to live in and more environmentally-friendly, especially ones that carry the federal government's highly recognizable R-2000 or ENERGY STAR label...

Good post.  I think people are starting to think more about the second price tag of owning a home beyond the mortgage and taxes.  The energy component is rising very fast and an upfront investment in reducing operating costs is one of the best investments a homeowner can make.  Not to mention, it's a good investment for our planet.
