We had record amounts of rain in May.  The last stat I heard was that it was the 15th wettest May on record.  However, we are still under Water Conservation Rules throughout most of the DFW area.

Because of the conservation efforts, in just the first quarter alone, we have conserved 16.5% more water than in the first quarter of 2006.

Many people ask why we are still under restrictions when we've had so much rain.  The main answer is because our lakes are not all at their main operating level as of yet.  Yes, we've had a lot of rain lately, but it hasn't made up for the past couple of years where it's been very dry.  The other thing is, if we've had so much rain, why do you even want to water your yard more?  It should be even easier to conserve water when nature has been taking care of it for us.

Many people outside the area are asking what type of restrictions we're on.  For most of the DFW area, you can only water your yard on your trash day.  Also, that water must be before 10am and after 6pm.  Many areas only have 1 trash day a week, which made for some very brown yards last year.  The City of Richardson actually has 2 trash days a week, so we get to water twice a week, but the same hour restrictions apply.

The City of Richardson has been offering Indoor Water Conservation Kits, and now they are offering Outdoor kits as well.  The Outdoor kits will include a soil moisture meter probe, an automatic lawn sprinkler timer, a six-position garden hose nozzle, a rain gauge, a drip gauge, and a flow meter bag.  You can pick one of for only $16.  The indoor kits are only $8.

Wow.  That is a nice service at a pretty afforadable price.  It seems rare to see a government entity act is such a forward thinking way.

Congrats on the rain. I think we had the driest may in history here in MS. My grass looks aweful. Sounds like a cool kit. The time restriction as far as from 6Pm to 10 am seem reasonable. They do that because if you water doing the day half your water eveporates before it gets to the subsoil.

Donna - you are right.  These restrictions are very reasonable and conservation is still necessary throughout DFW.  Tonight Frisco City Council is considering whether to adjust our Stage 3 restrictions.  I wrote a post on it because like you I'd like to see our conservation efforts continued.

Yes, Richardson is always trying to do things to help and better the area and their residents.  They even offer free Blue Recycle bags once a year to get recycling efforts higher.

The indoor kit even comes with heavy-duty plastic bags where you can catch your excess water in the sink or the shower and then reuse that water in your flowerbed or somewhere else in your yard.  They're all about making sure nothing is wasted when possible.

As for the times, I think allowing people to water till 10am is some times not good because in the heat of the summer, it's over 90 degrees by 9am!  I think the watering should be stopped at about 8am, but they can't do that because some of the cities actually don't allow watering between 6am-8am because that's when most people are taking showers.

Just wanted to say your blogs are always very informative. We live at Canyon Lake, TX outside New Braunfels, between San Antolnio and Austin. We have also been lucky with nice rain this spring and the lake is full with a nice flow down stream for the tourist to tube. BUT, water conservation will and should always be the front runner. With so many people moving from other parts of the country we don't want our precious water abused. I remember back in the 50's when went seven (7) years with no rain and had very very strict restrictions. So, let's take care of our WATER
