It's summertime, and the living is easy.  Beach books, reading by the pool books, reading anytime, anywhere books!  It's not a secret that I don't live to read, I read to live.  I love to escape into a good book and I have been reading all summer!  Right now I am reading an absolutely wonderful book that is such a surprise to me.  Why it's a surprise is a mystery, because my mom recommended it.  My mom has never lead my astray when it comes to books.  Or anything else, for that matter.

Teh Guernsey Literary and Potato Pike Society

If you are a history buff, particularly a WWII history buff, this is a must read.  It is a work of fiction.  I guess, to be accurate, it's an historical novel.  The novel's main character is a writer, the setting just after WWII.  The subject is the German Occupation of the Channel Islands.  It's about how the occupation affected the people on the island and how they coped.  The style is a bit different.  The entire book is in letters, to and from the main character.  It's charming, moving, and I am loving it.  I know I will be sad when I am finished.

So, it's July 20.  What are you reading?

I'm currently reading "Around the Bloc" by Stephanie Elizondo Griest. It's a good one for history buffs, politico buffs etc. A journal of sorts (non fiction) of a girls 4 year journey through just recently non communist or communist countries - starting with Russia. Very interesting and she's a great story teller.

Factoid of the day - did you know the average Russian drinks 4.2 gallons of vodka a year PER person?! Blech!

Dear Susan,

I love to read also!  Not only for enjoyment but for knowledge. A book was recommended to me "The Noticer" by Andy Andrews.  I was wondering if you had read it or was familiar with it?  I am a realtor and I read alot!  Anything that can help improve my service to my clients or help me understand the market better.  But I love to read at the beach.  My mom passed away almost 3 years ago and she loved to read and left me a whole library of books .  I love it and it helps me stay connected to her. Thanks for sharing your love for reading... Connie

Susan, we read that one in my Book Club. It was well received and generated some light-hearted discussion. Funny, my mom gave it to me, too!

I just finished reading, 'More Than It Hurts You,' by Darin Strauss. It was a good read...

Susan - I love the fact that you put out this post periodically.  I am now reading a book by T. Boone Pickens - his perspective on the oil industry and the future is fascinating.  Coming from someone who made a bundle selling oil, it's interesting to hear how much he thinks we should be focusing on alternative energy sources.

Susan, how ironic that you're reading this book. I just learned of the book myself when an Atlanta colleague mentioned her real estate reading group was reading that book next. I took a quick peak at her copy and as a writer myself, let me say it is not easy to progress an entire book along strictly through letters. I've seen letters or diary entries used occasionally during the course of reading a book but the entire plot moving along in that manner is a writing marvel!

By the way, this same reading group plans to read my new book, All In A Day's Work for Real Estate Agents: Humorous & Heartwarming Stories. Official release date was April 2009--more info. at http://www.worklikeadogbooks.com/realestate.html, with sample pages under Media section. The book includes more than 100 real-life, funny, bizarre stories from real estate agents in 44 states. Stories go far, FAR beyond catching people naked or having sex (which seems to be a right of passage in the land of selling real estate!) and include such things as disappearing houses, exploding toilets, holding a closing in a jail, being asked to be a client's birthing coach, finding a casket in a vacant listing, etc. Realtors truly have some crazy things happen to them in the course of selling real estate! Definitely not your average desk job!

Susan, I read this book a few months ago and it was WONDERFUL!  I was telling everyone about it, too :).  Another great book I read after that was 'The marHelp', which has been on the best seller list.  I HIGHLY recommend that one!  I am currently reading "Art of Racing in the Rain' and it is pretty good so far.  I love reading and I've been reading mostly fiction lately because it's such a great escape for me.  Can't wait to hear what you'll be reading next :).

Wow!  Did this post get away from me!!  Thank you for all the great book ideas!  I am in the middle of Scarpetta right now and as usually, Patricia Cornwell is gruesome!  I like it though, as I feel I am friends with most of the characters, I have been reading her for years!  I agree with Lisa, fiction is a wonderful escape.  I read mostly fiction and I buy others, but they just don't grab me and keep me coming back for more like a good story!  Enjoy!!

I picked up the most fabulous book at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop for $1. It is "The Crimson Petal and the White" by Michel Faber.  A 900 page book you can't put down from the first page.  He is a Scottish/Dutch, I think, writer.

It is about a prostitute in 19th Century London who works her way up in society.  Extremely well and differently written.  I am reading it so slowly because I don't want it to end.

Jane, the real test of a wonderful book is when you read it slowly because you don't want it to end!  I'll add it to my "to read" list on goodreads.com.  Thanks!

Susan, I love a post like this for it gives me ideas for other good reading material that I would have not necessarily picked.  I'm reading a book in German entitled "The Accident" about a man and a women in Hungary who met - well, by accident.  I have another one waiting (in English) "The Painted Drum" by Louise Erdreich, excerpts of this book appeared in The New Yorker so I'm anxious to read it.
