Most Sales People have goals, whether they are put in writing or not.  But how many of us know what our purpose is, or even ashed ourselves what our purpose is.  You might ask what is the difference, aren't goals and purpose the same?  I would say they are not.

We can have a purpose in life or in business without any particular goals attached to that purpose.  But I do not think that we can have goals with out a purpose, and if we do, then that might be the reason why we fail to meet our goals.

Purpose in my opinion is dependent on:

  • Knowledge
  • Attitude
  • Sense of Worth

Goals in my opinion are more:

  • Vision Driven
  • Ability to stay on task
  • Accomplishment

Purpose asks why am I here, and what do I want to accomplish, while goals are results orientated, setting strategies to accomplishing what we desire.

As we are now more than half way through the year, and you maybe looking back at the goals that you set at the beginning of the year, and wondering why you are not meeting them.  Then maybe you need to step back and evaluate whether your goals are in line with your purpose.  If they are not, then the odds are that you will not meet them, because meeting them will most likely not accomplish what you really desire.

I don't know how many of you have ever considered your purpose?  If you haven't before, I hope this blog causes you to do that, and to examine whether your goals will achieve your purpose.

George,

Earl Nightingale would be proud of you! Although he suggested all long term goals should be in writing and short term goals should be taped to the wall in front of you.

"Purpose asks why am I here," is to esotaric for me. To '60s coffie shopish. "I think there for I am!" :>)

This post is very timely! So many of us need to remind ourselves what we are here for, what are our goals? I read so much lately of would be reformers that forget ours is a fiduciary business, we are not here to reform the world, but rather to aid one client at a time.

"Purpose in my opinion is dependent on:

Goals in my opinion are more:

  • Vision Driven

  • Accomplishment"

Are worth repeating!

Sense of worth comes first for me...without that...I have nothing. :)

It takes vision to set those goals... it takes a plan and hard work to meet them.  I am off to a good start... however, life did present some significant challenges in my life that simply could not be ignored.  Things are getting back to normal.. and it is back to the plan.

Bill, thank you for your comment.  To many times we are so focused on changing things that we forget what our responsibilities are as Sales People.

Sally that is an excellent priority to have.

Joan glad to hear that things are back on track for you.  Some times life throws us a curve ball to see if we are paying attention :)

Well, I have to say, my plan was blown out of the water, and it is probably time to re-plan and re-goal. My issue is that I am a fly by the seat of my pants type, and that is probably not a very good thing. I have always just adapted as things change, without even realizing that I have adapted.

Very wise advice Mr. Souto, thank you!

Andrea, adapting and being flexible in not necessarily bad, but we do need to have a direction and plan for what we want to accomplish.

George: Yes, I do. It's funny. I didn't really set any goals this year and am having my best year so far. I will correct that. I changed companies in January so my only goal was to let everyone in my database know that I had moved. That being said, my overriding goal is to help others who are less fortunate. That's what drives me these days; an altruistic approach. Thanks for the post!

Ann, but we all need a purpose :)

Paul, helping others can be seen as a goal, but I view it more as a purpose.  In any case it looks like your purpose and goal are in line with each other :)

George,

This is a good idea for mid year thinking and planning for a strong finish.  As you know, my Coach makes sure that I do have goals.  Short and long term.  My purpose is driven, because that's who I am and how I live.  My goals would never be realized if I wasn't watching out for them.  This year has been really good for me.  Better than, twice as good as last year, already!  Whoo Hoo!

It's a Good Life!

Frances, that is great news.  I am at almost the volume I did last year.  I figure that I should reach it next month.

George,

I have a purpose actually many....  I would like to just be for a little while without a purpose.
