LIVING THE GREEN LIFE: Know Your Plastics!

Fort Lauderdale's Broward County is serious about being eco-friendly and recycling. Ultimately, consumers will use re-usable receptacles such as stainless steel water bottles, and glass and pottery containers at home.

Broward recycling wants to ensure we know our plastic numbers. As of this date, they center only accepts numbers 1 and 2.  By October, they will finally accept all 7 numbers--great news for those of us anxious to return to a greener planet.

Do you know your plastic numbers?  They are listed below:

Number 1:  PET (Polyetheylene terephthalate-I know-a mouthful!) -  soda bottles, oven-ready meal trays, water bottles.

Number 2:  HDPE (High-density polyethylene) - milk bottles, detergent bottles, grocery/ trash and retail bags.

Number 3:  PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) - plastic food wrap, loose-leaf binders, plastic pipes.

Number 4:  LDPE (Low-density polyethelene)  -  dry cleaning bags, produce bags, squeezable bottles.

Number 5:  PP (Polypropylene) - medicine bottles, aerosol caps, drinking straws, food containers-yogurt, ketchup bottles, sour cream/butter/hummus tubs.

Number 6:   PS (Polystyrene) - compact disc jackets, packaging Styrofoam peanuts, plastic tableware.

Number 7:  Other (no initials) - reusable water bottles, Tupperware and certain food containers.

Feel free to add these numbers to your recycling system.  Not only will processing these products properly reduce landfills, but help keep our resources abundant and our processing systems to a minimum.

Wishing you sunshine from my corner of paradise and all the residents who seek to protect it!
