2009 Golden Days Fairbanks Alaska Yep, it's that time of year again. Time for the 2009 Fairbanks Alaska Golden Days celebration.

Fairbanks was founded by men and women lured north by the promise of a new dawn... a new day that with luck would be filled with the sight of gold at the bottom of their goldpan or sluicebox. Felix Pedro fanned the flames of those desires when he discovered a massive gold-bearing creek north of Fairbanks. Fairbanks founding-father E.T. Barnette sought to capitalize on the news by establishing a trading post on the banks of the Chena River to serve the army of miners who flocked to the Interior.

The annual Golden Days celebration seeks to remember and celebrate Fairbanks gold rush history. One of the most popular events is the Golden Days Jail. For a mere $5 arrest warrants can be issued for friends, coworkers or even your boss... The Marshals will lock them up and throw away the key!

Events run from the July 22nd through the 25th and culminates with a boisterous street fair and the largest parade in the state. Over 100 entries will be on display including marching bands, clowns, jugglers, antique cars, unicycle riders and floats. The parade winds its way from the Carlson Center through downtown Fairbanks, where it ends at Noble Street and Airport Way.

Don't forget to get your Rubber Duckie tickets for the big race on the 25th. 6,000 yellow rubber duckies race from the Wendell Street bridge to the Cushman Street bridge for the chance to win cash and prizes totaling over $20,000, including a $10,000 cash price for first place! Tickets are available anywhere you see the bright yellow signs in business windows or Goldie & Luckie the big, inflatable yellow ducks!

I forgot that this year Jesse was the 50th anniversary of Alaska. That rubber ducky event and street fair and parade looks like you could snap some great pics from your area to share. Have fun if you go bud. That 50 number coincides with someone else locally who had a birthday in May... Hmmmm..

How interesting that people wuld go somewhere because they think that there will be something, like gold in Alaska, but waht is amazing is that people settle and stay way after the gold was gone. Now, I doubt they would go there if there was no gold, but once there, they settle.

Humans are strange creatures. But they can survive everywhere.

HAHAHAHA - the Rubber Duckie race sounds like a BLAST! What a great line up of events and it looks like it will be so much fun!

For $5 you can have people locked up and thrown in jail? I could see my managing broker paying $400 to have out entire office tossed in the slammer. She'd call it a bonding experience.

LOL @ Elizabeth. I had my entire staff locked up a few years ago... it was hilarious.

Leesa - It's crazy but fun to watch... everyone gets so excited over their rubber duckie.

Paddy - I'm sure I'll have some pictures... unless I get sidetracked at the margarita tent. haha :)

Jon - We can survive just about anywhere. You and I are living proof of that. I actually think you survived a harsher climate than we do here. Northern Russia is a hard, cold place... and you made it out in one piece.

Gary - I think I'm in the '50 in the rear view mirror club' at this point. haha

The duckies are up there? That is where my duck went. After the races here my duck disappeared, he was following some floozie duckette the last time I saw him. All those months of training wasted, he saw little miss floozie and that was that. He was in the lead, and suddenly took a 180 and chased her back past the starting line. If you see him, tell him all is forgiven, just come HOME! He is easy to recognize, he is yellow, rubber, with an orange bill.

If you see him, have him arrested, I will arrange bail and transportation home.

You think they'd come to NJ to pick up and arrest some folks if I wire you the money?? Great local fun!

Hi Jesse - Your Golden Days celebration sounds like it was a lot of fun. We have an annual rubber duckie race as part of one of our celebrations too. A good fundraiser and more exciting than you'd think!

I lived in North Pole a long time ago and love some of the festivals in central Alaska. Is the Summer Solstice Festival still going on?
