The news came as a bit of a surprise to many of us in the community. Mililani High School has enjoyed a great deal of success in track and field the last few years. Girls head coach Dane Matsunaga and boys head coach Marshall Ochi will be stepping down and will be sorely missed.
According to news reports both head coaches cited family reasons.
Coach Mashall Ochi, lead the Trajan boys for one season. The boys team won the OIA championship and took fourth in the state championships.
Coach Ochi, cited conflicts in his work schedule and he was getting married this summer. It was also announced that assistant coach Chad Miyamoto who was the former head coach will also be cutting back.
Dane Matsunaga a Mililani High School Alumni member, served six years as the Trojan girls head and was an assistant coach for one year. Mililani High School girls won the last three OIA titles under his coaching and a total of four during her tenure. Coach Matsunaga was recently married and announced he wanted to spend more time with his wife.
The Honolulu Advertiser quoted Mililani athletic director Glenn Nitta, "The school is also looking for new coaches in girl's basketball and water polo. Scott DeSilva and Barack Kanealii are also not returning."
Good luck and thank you to the coaches. They have helped keep the tradition of excellence strong at Mililani High School.
