So many times I've had friends say, "I'm not on Facebook.  That takes way too much time."  I can certainly understand that - I have a teenage daughter, after all.  :)

So how do you use this social networking tool without letting it become your master - and stealing your time away from more important pursuits?

Here's how I limit my time on Facebook:

1)   Don't mix business with pleasure.  I use Twitter for only business (although status updates go automatically to Facebook), and use Facebook only for friends & family.  While this goes against the recommendations of some "experts," it works better for me this way.   Business associates and strangers, even with common interests, have no need to see my family pictures or the details of who I'm meeting at the beach.  I do have a separate Facebook for my business, but I haven't developed that yet.

2)   No time for games.  I play no games and take no surveys or quizzes.  I'd rather use my rare playtime with my family or meeting with a friend (or taking a nap.....).

 3)  Ignore good causes.  Yes, buying pieces of blankets and supporting dozens of causes may be a good thing to do; however, I'd rather support my pet projects in real time, on-site volunteering.  I also click "ignore" for cute things like virtual hugs & gifts.

4)  Hide & Don't Seek.  Yep - I hide most quizzes, such as "What's your Native American Indian Name?"  "What do your eyes say about you?" and the "Beach Personality Test."  Say what?   By hovering your cursor over each person's status area, a "hide" button will appear on the right side and you can either hide everything from that person, or just that particular quiz.

 5)  Stay Current.  I briefly scan my friends' status updates 2-3 times a day to stay current, and only briefly comment when I actually have something to say or want to touch base with a friend or distant family member.

And there you have it - my fast, easy, efficient and fun way to use Facebook to stay connected.  How about you?

Beth, this sums up my use of FB perfectly!  I keep my use limited to connecting with family and friends mostly by reading unless comments are appropriate, no business use, and avoid all those gimmicky things some people love.

I use Facebook pretty much the same way as you do.  I know there are lots of other ways to use it productively but let's face it, you can't do it all. I put my "online" effort into 3 things - Twitter, Blogging and I do an e-Newsletter twice a month - which I use primarily to drive traffic to my blogs.

Your item #5 is worth it's weight in gold.  Keeping current on what friends are up to is all good.

I couldn't agree with you more, Beth. Like you, my FB is reserved for staying in touch with family and friends and my privacy settings are also set for limited access.

Thanks.  We are getting started and I have all kinds of requests for games - passing, hiding, choosing, or whatever.  I don't have the time for any of that, but want to have straightforward communication with my friends.

Stand tough, Jim.  Once you start accepting things, it's hard to stop!

It's great to know that others have found a workable solution as well.  I'm in great company.  Thanks for commenting, everyone.

I should also warn people that when you first start up, it does take longer, simply because you're in the process of connecting with old friends.

I was able to contact my best friend from 4th grade through Facebook.  She isn't on there, but I went through the old high school and found her sister, who connected me with email.  Great fun!

I like your post, I never play games-find it useless and I am not home nor have time for it.

I just set up a separate FB account for my business and am going to be  careful not to mix friends into it. It got too distracting and I didn't like news and comments from friends all mixed up together with business stuff. I think it can be a tremendous drain on my time and I am still trying to figure it all out.

I have avoided Facebook because I know how much time I have spent on AR at times! I'm about to take the plunge, though, and appreciate your tips. They really make sense. Thanks!

Go for it, Laurie.  I'm glad it was helpful.

Great post Beth, it took me so long to jump into Facebook and then I got overwhelmed with all the STUFF on there.  I gotta admit I did squirt someown with pickle juice from my watergun...once. :)

I just reread your post, Beth, and it's even better this time around. I took the plunge and signed up for Facebook yesterday, and now I fully appreciate its amazing potential as a time wilderness. Wow! I could lose hours! But thanks to you, I'm forewarned and forearmed. Blessings on you!

Good post.  You could always do a facebook page for business and one for personal use also.  But good points about staying focused.
