I had never heard that term before I came to Tennessee, althought I was familiar with the "hunt box" you'll find in Virginia. It's a similar idea; a hunt box has a couple of stalls for horses with an apartment upstairs and is used for foxhunting in the country on weekends. When the Big South Fork became a destination for trail riders, many people built what is known as a "cabarn," which is a cabin/barn combination with small living quarters and some stalls, usually under a single roof. The shape is completely different from a hunt box; cabarns here tend to be more the size and shape of a single wide with an efficiency apartment on one end and a short row of stalls under an overhang. This was intended primarily for weekend use for riders coming from Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga or surrounding states for the spectacular trail riding in Big South Fork national park.

As people come here more and more often, though, they often want to upgrade to something larger. Cabarns come on the market periodically but there are more and more spacious homes being built as more people move to this area full time.

I live minutes from the Cumberland Trailhead into Big South Fork National Park, in Spruce Creek Acres, an equestrian community that abuts the park itself. Horses are a major part of daily life here and this is a very active, supportive horse-oriented community. It is a gift to work as a realtor here, listing horse properties and selling horse properties to horse people! We joke that I've probably done more real estate on horseback than off! If you want to "live where you love to ride," let me help you find YOUR Big South Fork horse property .
