I'm one of those cooks that multi-tasks. So when the smoke alarm started going off, we attributed the deafening noise to my cooking habits. Days later, smoke alarms all over the house began to join in. Truth be told there was a funny smell too. I'll admit, we poked around some but could not figure out what was setting them off.

It did not take much longer for the source to become evident and we hired an expert to check our furnace. Too bad we hadn't hired one of the home inspectors that blog on Active Rain when we bought that little house.

Here is what we found. The clothes dryer had been depositing a fine layer of lint on the surface of the crawl space. Combined with the fact that the furnace had developed rust and flames were beginning to leap out, I was happy we finally paid attention to the smoke alarms.

Since then I've always had great respect for the institution of home inspection. In fact home inspectors are part of my Dream Team for buying a house, right after real estate agents and mortgage lenders.

Mrs Kate,

I only wish I had inspected that for you. I would have caught that one for sure. I pride myself on the detail of my inspections. I crawl around so you don't have to.

I understand your chagrin and had you not brought up that you missed the furnace in your inspection, I wasn't going to either. Silly squirrel. You are your own worst enemy. Kate

PS It's a good thing you have Mr. Smith now to monitor your errors.

Mrs Barbara,

The dear, sweet misguided lady is Nuts vs Nutsy so she just makes up these mean untruths about your honest, loving, caring, and very wonderful Godson. She lies about my mama too.

Yours truly,

Nutsy

Ms Barbara, I have been busy with a surprise for you and other Realtors. Lenn's blog about NAR was perfectly timed with my project. So I will have two surprises for you. The one that I have been working on all month and after that is done I will reveal Nutsy's mom.

But once you see her portrait, you will begin to wonder about the identity of his father.

I know I did.

Ms. Kate, CEO Lineage-R-Us

Nutsy, Your mother told me that story about you when you were three. Very funny. She is friendly, odd but friendly.

Terry, Where the dryer vents has always been something I've checked very carefully in every house since, believe me. And I make sure all smoke alarms have batteries and if they go off, I figure out why right away! Furnace inspections too. I guess I could say lesson learned! Kate

Kate - the fire department recommends that you replace your smoke detectors every 7 years.  No kidding.  They develop what is analagous to cataracts and get less and less able to detect problems.  I'm glad they alarmed you on the dryer lint - THAT is a frequent problem when the dryer is located near other appliances.

Jay, Every seven years? Cataracts? Now that is just wrong. Ah man. And I thought I was so smart just changing my batteries. Kate

There are mirrors inside that get dusty with time.  Eventually they simply cannot see each other very well.  That's all!  There's no way to get inside and clean them.  It's easier just to change them.  The batteries come at the same time...!

Yah but my smoke detectors are all wired together so that makes changing them more complicated, right?

Nope.  Just buy the proper one and plug it in.

P.s.  There are many types of connections.  Take a detector with you to the store so you buy the one that fits the male connection left in the ceiling.

If I can do it, you can!  The hardest part for me is screwing the device back onto the ceiling bracket!

Truth be told, I have a hard time just getting the covers back on after replacing batteries.
