Foto Friday: Black Racer and Rope

By
Real Estate Agent with Tropic Shores Realty - Ich spreche Deutsch!

Florida wildlife includes a variety of snake species, the majority of them harmless to humans.  Even living along the water, we do get the occasional snake passing through our yards.

I had just commented to my husband a few days ago that I hadn't really seen any snakes this year like we had in the previous years.

Lo and behold, within a couple of days, this black racer showed up on our back patio.  I guess he was trying to make friends with this rope laying around. I tried to get a littly closer but he didn't like that and took off in the grass.

Cool sighting. He almost blends in with everything. Our snakes here in CA are ones to stay away from, like the Rattlesnake.

I hope you'll remember me if you learn of anyone moving to "The OC" and I will do the same!

Best regards.

Silvia - That is one long snake.  Also being in Florida I see snakes often, but it's been a good 8 months since I've seen one.

These are really neat snakes and are big friends of man! We should never harm them.

Texas ranchers imported black or indigo racers years ago as they love to attack , kill and even eat rattle snakes.

John, I'm sure there are some snakes up in your area too although they do seem to like it warm!

Michael, we have rattlers here too, the diamond back and the pygmy and I too want them to stay away!

Michelle, same here. I was wondering whether they had moved out or something.

Richard, king snakes are masters of disguise as well and unfortunately too often mistaken for coral snakes.

Debra, at least I could see the whole thing! Sometimes you are guessing where the rest of the snake is...

Trey, I agree!  We distinguish here between black racers and eastern indigos as they different plus the indogs are federally protected.

Rita, they really aren't that bad are they? :-) You get used to them and learn to stay out of their way. The only trick is to see them first!

Kathy, this one was just long not even fat. :-) Racers like to lay out in the sun, other snakes are much more secretive that's why we don't see them!

Robert, I don't think I would want to catch one! Plus I think they would try to bite you if there was no other way for them to escape.

Ask and Ye shall receive, or sometimes you do get what you asked for!  At least, now you can still say that FL has snakes :-)
