I'm going back to the Atkins plan to lose the 40 pounds that crept up on me in the last two years, AND I'm going to train to run a half-marathon.  I've set up an outside blog on Blogger to document the whole process!

It should be interesting to see if I can train for a race and lose weight while not eating those pesky carbs!

Dawn:  From the looks of your picture, I don't see how you could even HAVE forty pounds to lose.  But... good luck in your quest.  Let us know of your progress.  Maybe you will give others ( like me ) the motivation to do the same.  Best of luck !

I'm about 10 pounds heavier than I was when that picture was taken.  I hold all my weight in my butt and legs, so it doesn't show in headshots!

To really be a runner and take the pressure off my knees, I should be about 40 pounds lighter according to the bmi charts, my frame size, etc.  Plus I feel better.   I was over 260 at one point, and as I said, 40 pounds lighter at one point.  I'm not going to yo-yo again!

Dawn,

Have you ever had gout issues with the Atkins diet and rapid weight loss?

Good luck to you Dawn!  I just lost 40 lbs. myself and it feels so good to use one of the new scales that shows BMI, % of body fat, etc. and see the numbers in the right range.

That's a great idea.  I'm a carbaholic, very addicted.  Good luck, stick with it and it will fall off.

I think your crazy..... No carbs while training and running a half. Your body needs carbs for energy. Don't expect to break any records, but I guess if you goal is to lose the weight, good luck.

Dawn,

Good luck with your goals. I trained pretty hard a few years ago on the Zone diet (similar to Atkins, no simple carbs) with no ill effects. In fact, I felt great. Corie is right that the body does need complex carbs (for example, fruit and vegetables) but can pretty much do without the simple ones (sugars, bread, pasta, etc) which are broken down quickly into sugars, cause elevated insulin production and lead to the body storing rather than using the energy.

That was my experience in any case.
